In his first interview since his Feb. 1 confirmation, Attorney General John Ashcroft said he plans to make curbing drug use among youths one of his top three priorities. The other two are stopping gun violence and ending discrimination, the Republican former senator from Missouri said on CNN's "Larry King Live" last week.
Mr. Ashcroft said that he and President Bush want to "concentrate on educating children away from drugs."The administration has proposed a $25 million "Parents Drug Corps" to assist nonprofit organizations in educating parents to help prevent youth drug abuse.Mr. Ashcroft also criticized former President Clinton's policies on drugs and his oft-quoted statement that he had once tried marijuana but did not inhale. The attorney general contended that Mr. Clinton's stance helped trigger an increase in marijuana use during the 1990s.Mr. Ashcroft's nomination was opposed by some school officials and civil rights advocates because of his past stands against the costly court-ordered school desegregation plans in St. Louis and Kansas City.Source: Education Week On The WebPublished: February 14, 2001 Copyright: 2001 Editorial Projects in EducationWebsite: http://www.edweek.org/Feedback: http://www.edweek.org/info-epe/feedback.cfmCannabisNews Articles - John Ashcrofthttp://cannabisnews.com/thcgi/search.pl?K=John+Ashcroft

hey camon now,
the tax cuts are obviously a returning favor for all those coporations that funded his campaign. anyone should be able to realize that the tax cuts are aimed at the wealthier part of the economic scale. increasing consumer spending is the least of his worries. on a different matter, does anyone else notice that bush has the worse public speaking skills a president has had in years? i mean, talk about misuse of words, pauses at the wrong moments, and insecurity. s--t, sometimes i'll hear him speaking and won't believe that the guy didn't practice his speach a bit more before going on the air.

A little cheering up...
A hippie, a deadhead, and a prohibitionist are sitting with there wives at a tea party...As there served, the hippie says to his wife, "Pass the sugar, honey. Not to be outdone, the Deadhead asks his wife, "Pass the honey, sugar." And then the prohibitionist says, "Pass the tea, bag." On a serious note, Jaun, I dont agree with you, I think his proposed taxcut will generate consumer spending.

the very uncertain future
Posts 1-4 together can weave an interesting story, and I am persuaded by all of them: The propaganda and repression have reached a super-saturated level, and an unpredictable future may be about to precipitate. I'm not so sure about 'economic collapse', but the social effects of a possible strong recession and high personal debt could be the catalysts of fast-paced events.

Right on Robbie....
...down at the liquor store the current NewsWeak issue is titled "The War on Addiction". Inside, the NewsWeak editors treat us to the usual swill that fully supports the war on drugs. One short piece is about the PDFA-sponsored commercials demonizing pot. NewsWeak lauds these spots with high praise...and why????, you might ask? Because "teen pot use has dropped 26%".It's true, as Robbie pointed out, that drug warriors will simply make up, on the spot, whatever stats will support their funding request from whichever government agency happens to be handing out that week. The end result of all this duplicity? Fewer and fewer people believe a word that comes out of drug warriors mouths.

Are you kidding?
John Ashcroft is the best thing that ever happened to drug policy reform. A controversial conservative Christian-reich boob appointed by a President select with no mandate and a history of substance abuse, both legal and illegal. As public dislike for Ashcroft and W grows -- and it will when the economy collapses -- there will be a corresponding dissatisfaction with all that they represent, including the WOSD.

That's a great idea
Mr. Ashcroft said that he and President Bush want to "concentrate on educating children away from drugs."However, that fails to make clear how hunting consenting adult users is a good idea. Any consenting adult over age 21 can get drunk as hell all the time and we still attempt to "educate children away from booze". How the hell is one ok and the other not? Talk about arbitrary.

Wait just a frekin' minute...
Mr. Ashcroft also criticized former President Clinton's policies on drugs and his oft-quoted statement that he had once tried marijuana but did not inhale. The attorney general contended that Mr. Clinton's stance helped trigger an increase in marijuana use during the 1990s.How many different drug control types, from Barry Mac to people out of CASA have said that marijuana use dropped off over the later 90's? These g-damned politicos just come up with any "figures" that help them articulate their lies. You know, we hear these rumblings coming out of the Bush admin. plus a "new" Republican effort at "drug abuse and prevention and treatment." Put your money where your mouth is, but dollars to donuts, they'll continue to scream out the harm-reduction approach while making justifications for a much larger enforcement and interdiction effort. The fact that John Ashole is the top-cop in the country doesn't bode well for any sort of drug-reform over the next four years. We may be called upon to do more than just talk about it, folks. Gary Johnson may as well be a hare krishna for any support he'd get from his party.
April 20th? Don't forget May 5th
