Seems like so many use drugs in sports!
Tulsa, Okla. -- Former NBA player Richard Dumas was released from Tulsa County Jail early this morning following his arrest on a complaint of drug possession.
Dumas, 29, whose drug troubles cost him the equivalent of three seasons with the Phoenix Suns before the team waived him in 1995, was booked into the jail late Thursday, said Sgt. Dale Eberle, spokesman for the Sheriff's Department. Tulsa police arrested Dumas and another man Thursday at a Ramada Inn on complaints of possession of a controlled drug and drug paraphernalia. Police went to the hotel to serve Dumas with an outstanding warrant for not wearing a seat belt. Police reports indicate officers allowed into the room saw drug paraphernalia and later found a bag containing rocks that allegedly tested positive for cocaine. A glass pipe also was found. Officers reported that Dumas told them he bought the crack cocaine and intended to distribute it to a friend. He was released on his own recognizance under a pre-trial program, Eberle said. Dumas played just two years at Oklahoma State before drug problems ended his college career. He turned pro in Israel and the Suns drafted him in 1991. He made the team but failed a random drug test just before the 1991-92 season. Dumas missed that season and part of the 1992-93 season. Dumas played 48 games and stared 33 in 1992-93, averaged 15.8 points and 4.6 rebounds. He played in 23 playoff games. The Suns waived him after a 1995 season in which he played in 15 games and averaged only 5.5 points and 2.0 rebounds. Dumas later joined the Philadelphia 76ers as a free agent but spent most of the time on the bench before a foot injury ended his season in 1996.
