Tempe School District to Consider Drug-Testing!

TEMPE School officials have read the studies and heard the stories about the increasing number of students drunk or on drugs on campus. Now they plan to act.
The Tempe Union High School District Governing Board will consider adopting a policy tonight that would be Arizona's toughest for nailing students suspected of being hammered at school. A tentative plan would mandate blood, urine or breath tests for students suspected of being on drugs. Refusal to submit could result in suspension or expulsion. "The problem is huge," said board member Dick Foreman. "I don't need to be convinced anymore. I don't need anymore studies. What I need is a response." Under the proposed plan, the 12,000-student district would take whatever legal means it can to reduce the use of drugs among students. Staff members would follow a prescribed protocol that begins with escorting a student suspected of being on drugs to an administrator. Staggering, glassy or bloodshot eyes, dark glasses indoors, slurred speech and hyperactivity are among the suspected behaviors, officials said. The administrator also would evaluate the student's behavior, followed by a physical assessment by the nurse. If the teacher, administrator and nurse have reasonable suspicion the student is high, a drug test would be required. http://www.azcentral.com/news/0310valbos.shtml
