Posted by FoM on March 05, 1999 at 06:07:19 PT Local and federal authorities are preparing to bust a marijuana-distribution ring that deals in ``hundreds of pounds'' of marijuana in Portage, Summit, Stark and Medina counties, Portage County Prosecutor Victor V. Vigluicci said yesterday. Local and federal authorities conduct searches at 18 locations targeting marijuana-distribution ring``It's an ongoing investigation, so we cannot release many details,'' Vigluicci said. ``There have been no indictments or arrests made.''Law enforcement officials simultaneously executed searches at 18 locations in the four counties beginning at 7 a.m. Wednesday. The searches -- all of homes -- were done using nine federal and nine local search warrants. All of the local warrants and six of the federal warrants were issued for Portage County residences. Three federal warrants were executed in Summit, Stark and Medina counties, said J. Thomas Campbell, supervisor of the Akron FBI office.Campbell would not release the locations where searches were conducted or the names of suspects being investigated. In Medina County, two sheriff's deputies and an agent from the Medina County Drug Task Force provided support to FBI and Drug Enforcement Agency agents during a 12-hour search of a single-family home on Rivers Corners Road in Harrisville Township, Medina Sheriff's Lt. Thomas DelRegno said.DelRegno said he didn't know what, if anything, was seized in the search but that agents were looking for ``information and documentation.''Akron police Capt. Craig Gilbride said officers from the Akron narcotics unit assisted federal agents in local searches. But because the Akron Police Department was not the lead agency, he would not give details of the searches.Search teams seized drugs, guns and cash, Vigluicci said.A joint investigation into the drug ring was launched several months ago by the U.S. attorney and Portage County prosecutor's offices.Agents from the Internal Revenue Service; Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms; and Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation also took part in the searches.Local law enforcement agencies were the Western Portage Drug Task Force; Stark County Metropolitan Narcotics Unit; Portage, Stark and Medina county sheriff's departments; and police departments from Akron, Stow, Jackson Township, Kent, Ravenna and Brimfield Township.Campbell and Vigluicci said indictments and arrests are expected as the investigation continues.http://www.ohio.com/bj/news/docs/020002.htm Home Comment Email Register Recent Comments Help Post Comment Name: Optional Password: E-Mail: Subject: Comment: [Please refrain from using profanity in your message] Link URL: Link Title:
