Santa Cruz has become a quasi-mecca for supporters of cannabis and hemp, and just in time to inform the patrons/patients of the Compassion Flower Inn on Laurel Street, the Santa Cruz Industrial Hemp Expo 2000 opens it doors on Saturday and Sunday, providing educational information about industrial hemp to the public. The third annual S.C. Hemp Expo will feature the renowned Kentucky Hemp Grower’s Cooperative Museum and Library for the 2000 show, established in 1994 to teach about the various uses of industrial hemp in society. The expo features more than 75 booths that will provide a positive basis for public support of hemp reintroduction, with a well-organized, open-to-the-public tradeshow-based setting. And those attending are bound to learn all they need to know about hemp, since the Kentucky Hemp Museum collects, preserves and distributes information regarding industrial hemp’s historical, cultural and agricultural importance. The expo will clarify the economic viability and possibilities that hemp presents as an environmentally friendly, sustainable crop alternative for Kentucky’s ailing tobacco farmers. There will also be historical implements, machinery and tools used in the previously lucrative hemp industry as well as new products such as harvesting and processing technology that has been created in the new and ever-changing hemp industry. There will also be live music, a hemp fashion show, a hemp house, a hemp camp display, hemp foods and beverages, workshops, videos, speakers and panel discussions. As an added bonus, the legendary Grateful Dead roadie, Wavy Gravy, will be on as living proof that the ideals and beliefs of a hemp-supportive generation are being continued today. The S.C.
