Detectives continue crackdown on drugsMethamphetamine, marijuana seizedFeb. 19, 1999 Kanawha County sheriff's detectives continued their emphasis on the methamphetamine trade Wednesday and the violence associated with it. Wednesday afternoon, detectives found a woman they had been looking for. Deputies had a warrant from South Charleston charging Krista Jones, 23, of Poca with petit larceny. Jones was found inside a Charleston area motel with Cecil Allen Dean Jr., 32, of Charleston, more than 10 ounces of methamphetamine, between eight and 10 pounds of marijuana and more than $10,000 in cash, said Sheriff Dave Tucker. "This is another major drug dealer removed from our streets," he said at a Thursday press conference announcing the arrests. "This is the largest methamphetamine/marijuana seizure in the history of the Sheriff's Department." Jones and Dean have federal drug charges pending against them. A preliminary hearing has been set for Tuesday before federal Magistrate Jerry Hogg. Just last month, deputies arrested a man with 10 ounces of methamphetamine, a drug which accelerates a person's physical system and is called crank on the streets. That was a record seizure by the department at that time. "[Wednesday's] seizure brings the total drug seizure for 1999 to over one pound of methamphetamine for a street value of close to $100,000," said sheriff's Capt. Larry Dodson, who has been heading the investigations. Police have valued an ounce of crank at $4,200, or about $100 to $150 for a gram on the street. Four 1998 Kanawha County murders are alleged to be related to the use or sale of methamphetamine. Police have made an arrest in the June 25 murder of Roger Allen Kidd, 34, of Falling Rock. No arrests have been made in the execution-style deaths of a couple found in their Jefferson residence, or a Campbells Creek man gunned down in his truck by masked men while his young son looked on. "Anything that we investigate we're going to ask about the murders," Dodson said, while declining to link Wednesday's arrests to any of the murders. Investigators do want to know if Jones or Dean knew the victims - Jeffrey Stone of Campbells Creek, or Christina Renee Alberts and her boyfriend Leonard M. Watts of Jefferson, he said. If for no other reason than "due to the fact that they were in the drug trade," Dodson said.
