Speeding car leads police to drug arrestsFeb. 19, 1999 Area police made four drug-related arrests Thursday night, confiscating more than a pound of marijuana and a small amount of crack cocaine. Charleston Police Officer T.S. Williams pulled over James Smith and Derrick Calvert for speeding east on Washington Street with no headlights. Smith, the driver, had no license and Calvert told Williams that his name was Dered Tyler, according to a criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. Neither man had identification with them and both asked to be taken to the station to clear their names. Williams charged the two with obstruction of justice and took them to the station, the complaint stated. When searched, officers found eight bags of crack cocaine in Calvert's right sock and another bag between the toes of his left foot. The total amount weighed nine grams. Both Smith and Calvert were held in South Central Regional Jail under $100,000 bond. Police do not believe those are their actual names. Earlier, State Police arrested Timothy Wayne Mandell, 25, 714 Fayette Pike, Montgomery for manufacturing and delivery of marijuana. Trooper T.D. Landis said a police dog identified a package addressed to Mandell as containing drugs and she delivered it Mandell's residence. An unidentified friend of Mandell's accepted the package from Landis, then Mandell returned and took possession. Landis arrested him and found one pound of marijuana in the package. State Police also charged a Winifrede man with a drug violation. Gregory M. Green, 20, was charged with possession of marijuana, driving under the influence of drugs and failure to maintain control of his vehicle after his car was involved in a an accident on U.S. 60 near Glasgow, Trooper L.R. Bryson wrote in a criminal complaint. Bryson smelled marijuana at the scene of the accident and searched Green's vehicle, where he found a pipe and a small amount of marijuana in the center console. A further search turned up eight bags of marijuana, weighing up to 32 grams. Green passed the sobriety test, but failed the urinalysis. Both Green and Mandell were released after posting bond.
