Why don't we live other countries alone?
Johannesburg,XinhuaSouth Africa will formally accede to the 1988 United Nations Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Monday, local daily the Citizen reported Monday.
In doing so, South Africa will join 148 other member states of the UN and the European Union, which are already signatories to the convention. The convention was specifically formulated to deal with the growing problem of international drug trafficking. In recent years, South Africa has become a transit route for illicit drug-trafficking. By implementing the convention, South Africa will play a meaningful role by cooperating with the international community to combat illicit drug trafficking, as well as ensuring that the overflow of drugs destined for consumption elsewhere do not enter its borders, South African Foreign Ministry officials said. The departments of Justice, Finance, and Customs and Excise, and the South African Police Service will be responsible for implementing the convention.
