Two public school safety officers, working under the new, stricter supervision of the Police Department, have been busted in separate drug stings, authorities said yesterday.
Carlos Aviles, a $475-a-week school security guard at two Bronx elementary schools, was arrested Feb. 4 after negotiating the purchase of 4 kilos of heroin, a criminal complaint states. As of yesterday, Aviles was still technically working as a safety officer, though Board of Education officials did not disclose to which schools he is assigned.A second safety officer, Gil Gomez, was suspended Friday after being arrested on cocaine possession charges by Englewood, N.J., police, according to NYPD officials. The arrests — neither of which took place on school grounds — were made less than two months after responsibility for the School Safety Division jumped from the Board of Education to the NYPD.The shifting of oversight was made under pressure from Mayor Giuliani, who criticized the Board of Education for doing a poor job of screening applicants with criminal records and other problems.Aviles was hired by the Board of Education in 1992 and became an NYPD employee just before Christmas, along with some 3,500 others in the division.Board of Education officials had no information late yesterday regarding Gomez. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration connected Aviles to a heroin ring dealing in large amounts of narcotics, according to a complaint filed last week by Assistant U.S. Attorney Bonnie Jonas. On Feb. 4, DEA agents arrested Aviles after he and an alleged accomplice met at an informant's apartment, the complaint states.
