Officer William Preis, who was working in plainclothes with the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, was among the officers arresting a group of people accused of selling drugs when a fight broke out. Bones in Preis' hand were broken during the tussle Tuesday night, and Preis will require surgery, Portland police Capt. Russell Gauvin said Wednesday. Phish had another concert Wednesday night, and police, both in uniform and in plainclothes, planned heavy patrols near the center. Dozens more were given court summonses Tuesday night. The popular Vermont band has a strong following of fans who travel from across the country to attend shows. Mingled with the vendors and revelers were about 40 state and local police, half in plainclothes. Jail records showed 25 people who live outside Maine were sent to jail on charges ranging from drug violations to assault. They were from as far away as British Columbia, Oregon and the Midwest. Police seized marijuana, hallucinogens and other drugs. Portland police said more than 30 arrests were made outside the center. Several more were made on Interstate 295 heading into Portland, Gauvin said. Police and liquor agents also issued 29 summons for drinking in public and six for possession of alcohol by an underage person, Gauvin said. It;s sad that in the world we live that, a hard working somewhat law abiding citizen goes to a venue, to only be prayed on by law officials, in disguise none the less. we need to express our concerns, and learn to love and respect the decision others make for themselves. keep america green [ Post Comment ] Comment #2 posted by military officer guy on December 09, 1999 at 21:12:17 PT don't play their game... i disagree, i think we need to fight back but not with violence...let's win the war, but not by stepping down to their level...
