cannabisnews.com: Wife's Drug Woes My Fault: McCain Wife's Drug Woes My Fault: McCain Posted by FoM on October 09, 1999 at 06:37:31 PT Source: New York Daily News GOP presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain says in a TV interview that he feels partially responsible for his wife's painkiller addiction. "Maybe I was wrapped up too much in Washington and my ambitions to pay as much attention as I should have," McCain tells NBC's "Dateline" in an interview to be televised Sunday. The Vietnam war hero said he missed the warning signs of Cindy McCain's 1989-1992 addiction to prescription drugs while he was in the midst of a savings and loan scandal in Washington."I should've understood," McCain said. "I should've detected this earlier on. Clearly there were signs."I'd call almost every day and sometimes she would sound a little bleary and unconnected and I would think she's just tired or sleepy." Cindy McCain developed her craving for painkillers after two unsuccessful back surgeries. She said she got the prescription pain medicines through a charity she founded, the American Voluntary Medical Team. A doctor wrote prescriptions at her direction for medical missions worldwide, and she sometimes doubled the amount of medication needed, keeping some for her own use.She insisted she did not deprive people who needed the drugs."I took a good portion of them, but I didn't take all of them," Cindy McCain said. "I have done good things, and the best thing I've done is go into recovery and stay drug-free." In August, Cindy McCain told the Daily News that her struggle "brought us closer together as a family," but "there's an element of people out there that's kind of vicious."The McCains decided to go on TV to discuss the issue rather than wait for one of his presidential opponents to bring it up.During her addiction, her husband and four other senators were being investigated for interceding with a federal regulator on behalf of savings and loan figure Charles Keating.McCain received a mild rebuke from the Senate Ethics Committee for exercising poor judgment in the Keating affair.Original Publication Date: 10/09/1999 New York Daily News Online END SNIP --> Snipped Home Comment Email Register Recent Comments Help Comment #7 posted by Clipper on October 01, 2000 at 05:24:23 PT: Cindy McCain's hair style I LOVE Cindy's hair style. Ok maybe two questions. Why do you stoner loser bastards think that it's so funny for some McCains wife to be a druggie? Are you just out to prove that everyone is out to get a fix? Is that all you think about? Are you so wraped up in your drug habbit that you find humor in degrading others who are worse off than your slow ambitionless selves?Personaly I find it absurd for any decent person to even consider...Sorry, I'm too stoned to keep this up. I've got mountains to climb. Out. Cindy didn't just decide to quit one day - she was caught. Her actions violated numerous federal laws, but luckily she was married to one of our "rulers" and he bent the rules for her. Due to John's influence Cindy was able to receive one of the limited spots on a federal drug deferment program. A program design for elites to bail one another out. The kicker though is that John McCain had voted against the deferment program as being too soft on crime. McCain is opportunistic hypocrite. This can all be verified using lexis-nexis etc. I might however have gotten a specific part of this story wrong (likely the timing) - memory isn't perfect.
