"It took us about 20 years of research to figure this out, but we are very excited," said Pierre Desprez, one of the scientists behind the discovery, to The Huffington Post. "We want to get started with trials as soon as possible." The Daily Beast first reported on the finding, which has already undergone both laboratory and animal testing, and is awaiting permission for clinical trials in humans. Desprez, a molecular biologist, spent decades studying ID-1, the gene that causes cancer to spread. Meanwhile, fellow researcher Sean McAllister was studying the effects of Cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant. Finally, the pair collaborated, combining CBD and cells containing high levels of ID-1 in a petri dish."What we found was that his Cannabidiol could essentially 'turn off' the ID-1," Desprez told HuffPost. The cells stopped spreading and returned to normal. "We likely would not have found this on our own," he added. "That's why collaboration is so essential to scientific discovery."Desprez and McAllister first published a paper about the finding in 2007. Since then, their team has found that CBD works both in the lab and in animals. And now, they've found even more good news."We started by researching breast cancer," said Desprez. "But now we've found that Cannabidiol works with many kinds of aggressive cancers--brain, prostate--any kind in which these high levels of ID-1 are present." Desprez hopes that clinical trials will begin immediately. "We've found no toxicity in the animals we've tested, and Cannabidiol is already used in humans for a variety of other ailments," he said. Indeed, the compound is used to relieve anxiety and nausea, and, since it is non-psychoactive, does not cause the "high" associated with THC. While marijuana advocates will surely praise the discovery, Desprez explained that it's not so easy as just lighting up."We used injections in the animal testing and are also testing pills," he said. "But you could never get enough Cannabidiol for it to be effective just from smoking." Furthermore, the team has started synthesizing the compound in the lab instead of using the plant in an effort to make it more potent. "It's a common practice," explained Desprez. "But hopefully it will also keep us clear of any obstacles while seeking approval." [ Post Comment ] Comment #11 posted by observer on September 21, 2012 at 15:11:40 PT Not THC! No smoking pot! No reason to legalize! re: "Cannabidiol, or CBD, a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound found in the cannabis plant."Notice the careful wording. They emphasize the "non-psychoactive chemical" mantra - but they don't mention that the psychoactive chemicals (THC) have the anti-cancer effects too. But "psychoactive" is taboo. A government-grant career ender. A political third rail. A non-starter... Prohibitionists want you to believe cannabidiol is the only anti-cancer compound in cannabis. But that's a lie. re: "But you could never get enough Cannabidiol for it to be effective just from smoking."More weaseling. Since the THC has similar (if not more powerful) anti-cancer properties, you could get a protective effect from "smoking". And you could eat the natural cannabis, and or extract oil from your cannabis, with tremendous anti-cancer effects. Just like Rick Simpson is doing. So this seems to be the new party line: Oh, well some non-psychoactive cannabis chemicals can be studied - in a govt/corporate lab somewhere. But not that taboo evil THC or natural pot - oh, no. We'll pretend THC (especially natural THC in cannabis) is wicked evil; but the NON-psychoactive Cannabidiol, well, that may be OK to study. Nothing to see here folks - no reason to smoke pot, and certainly no reason (!) to legalize marijuana. Move along. Move along." The big story here is the ongoing suppression of this information, http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/potcancer.htm So, "Why would the government want to keep us from knowing this?" http://drugnewsbot.org [ Post Comment ] Comment #10 posted by Storm Crow on September 21, 2012 at 13:07:14 PT Just saw a news article on this on HLN.... Not killed, but HEALED! This could change the way we treat these cancers! [ Post Comment ] Comment #8 posted by schmeff on September 21, 2012 at 11:35:38 PT New Information? Don't Think So. We learned back in the '70's that cannabis stopped the metastasis of cancer from the Medical College of Mississippi (if memory serves.)About 6 or 7 years ago, this research was revived by Dr. Manuel Guzman in Spain, who was running clinical trials on brain cancer patients.Forty years we've known about the efficacy of cannabis for treating, preventing and curing cancer, and for longer than that, our corporate-controlled police state has prohibited this natural plant to the sick and dying. For no other purpose than greed. This article is part of a vast political theater staged by Big Pharma and the politicians they own to project the illusion that this is "new" and "exciting" information."We started by researching breast cancer," said Desprez. "But now we've found that Cannabidiol works with many kinds of aggressive cancers--brain, prostate--any kind in which these high levels of ID-1 are present." Again, the effectiveness of cannabis compounds against breast (and other) cancers were demonstrated FORTY YEARS AGO! As Sam Adams and afterburner note below, every effort is made to promote the fiction that this miraculous new discovery is possible only by highly specialized industrial processes that can safely isolate "a non-toxic, non-psychoactive chemical compound" from the natural herb that is already understood to be so dangerous as to be prohibited by the Controlled Substances Act, which, in direct contradiction to the first fiction, asserts that cannabis has no medical value. The purpose of the fiction itself is to steal this amazing medicinal plant from the people to make it a profit vehicle for the ruling elite.Whether "we the people", to whom the Creator gave this plant, buy this fiction or not...doesn't really matter. The banksters, bullies, and billionaires who are busily selling our country and our freedoms for profit - and the politicians they own - have repeatedly demonstrated that they really don't care if we believe their lies or not.The knowledge of cannabis and cancer was suppressed forty years ago because corporations couldn't see much profit potential in an easily grown herb. And if anyone could grow their own medicine, the profits derived from often-toxic corporate 'medicine' would decline.Since that time, there's been a long, carefully orchestrated campaign by our corporate masters. They've learned that since they can't compete with natural medicines on a level playing field, they'll tilt the field. They have tools now. The "War on Drugs." The "Controlled Substances Act." How to profit from an easily grown, but extremely in-demand herb? Make it illegal for anyone to grow but you.So it's safe now, to discover that cannabis cures cancer. There is some hesitation to discover this, of course. For the last half century or so, it's been very lucrative to treat cancer. The consolation for losing the cancer treatment market will be the HUGE profits from cannabis medicines monopolized by Big Pharma. (I predict once cannabis is properly pharmaceuticalized for corporate profit, it will be readily available for any and all 'patients.') And what of the millions dead from cancer in the last fifty years? Who cares! The quest for profit rarely involves moral reflection. And it's naive and absurd to believe it stops with cannabis, or 'drugs.' Every year, the DEA adds items to the list of Controlled Substances. It's a process not open for review, challenge, or any meaningful oversight. Reflect on the fact that for over two decades, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary - as evidenced by this story - the DEA still insists, and is given political cover to insist, that cannabis has no medical value. The power of the Congress to control "substances" was stolen. The first experiment in federal "substance" control, Prohibition (alcohol) was enabled by amending the Constitution. This was done democratically, and when Prohibition was judged a failure, we the people just as democratically revoked the power of congress to control substances. The Constitution hasn't been amended since then, and the greedheads know how unlikely that would be, given the historical record and memory of Prohibition, so again, the Controlled Substance Act is simply theft [ Post Comment ] Comment #7 posted by Hope on September 21, 2012 at 10:05:50 PT Mainstream media's treatment of the story. Supply lines to many natural resources were disrupted. Petrochemical mad scientists proposed the 'solution' of synthesizing natural organic components. This obsession with 'active ingredients' instead of nature's balanced and buffered traditional herbal remedies has expanded from inorganic chemical medicines to inorganic chemical food additives. War on herbs and plants is poisoning the public. The federal government is complicit in this attack on our nutrition and health. It is not a political issue. Obama is not responsible for this obsession: it has been going on for decades under multiple administrations, under both Republican and Democratic administrations and congresses. This very War on nature is the cause of many of the health problems that plague today's populace. Nature is not the enemy. Nature is life support. "don't start smoking yet, we haven't proven anything" "there's no guarantee this will work with herbal cannabis"Those statements are all career-protection. Otherwise, the various Pharma execs are going to read their report and black-ball the living daylights out of them. What? Patients only need to take an HERB! There are very few people who have even used a proven high-CBD strain, I'm guessing these guys have absolutely no idea how much can be absorbed through inhalation, or sub-lingually, or any other way.
