World News -- One of the most prominent figures in the legalization community died today, 70 year-old Oregon resident Jack Herer, author of The Emperor Wears No Clothes and lifelong cannabis activist.California NORML reports and Salem-News.com confirms Herer passed away this morning, after months of serious health complications from a massive heart attack in late 2009.
California NORML's Dale Geiringer said Herer was an idealistic, hard-headed pioneer with a voice louder than any P.A. system."Jack's big contribution was to raise awareness of hemp and the importance of hemp in American agriculture and industry before the mid 20th century. I saw an immediate impact when his book came out around 1990. I had just gotten involved in the marijuana movement and it was the height of the war on drugs. People would just avoid you like the plague. Then when Jack had his book come out, hemp suddenly became an environmental issue."Herer's work in The Emperor Has No Clothes became canon to the new generation of activists. However, his later attempts to change various states' laws through the initiative process met with failure. He tried for years to get hemp initiatives on the different ballots, but they proved too radical for the time."He kept staying with his initiative and it always had problems. He was asking for a little bit more than the moon," says Gieringer. "It's ironic because he died the year full-scale legalization — I should say half-scale legalization is on the ballot. My recollection is Jack wasn't particularly enthusiastic about it."According to Herer, The Emperor Wears No Clothes has sold 600,000 copies. Herer also had a strain of potent cannabis named after, called Jack Herer (below).URL: http://drugsense.org/url/ZVUdK0LBWe'll miss you, brother.Source: East Bay Express (CA)Author: David Downs Published: April 15, 2010Copyright: 2010 East Bay ExpressWebsite: http://www.eastbayexpress.com/Contact: http://drugsense.org/url/asx2PociURL: http://drugsense.org/url/wfhHB64ZCannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

Jack was our Moses........
He did not live to be in the "promised land" of legalization, but he saw we could make it there now, without him, and went home. His spirit flies high and free!

Big Loss
He will be so missed but I think he truly did turn it into an environmental issue rather than just a "smoking pot" issue. he originated 25,000 + uses....he was a pioneer. fuel food and fiber! jobs! the future! he turned on multiple generations and his books will continue to do so. To Jack....it WILL happen soon.LEGAL. REALIZED. HEALED.IN OUR LIFETIME....

We Love you Jack
I'm still hereFriend, please don't mourn for meI'm still here, though you don't see.I'm right by your side each night and dayand within your heart I long to stay.

My body is gone but I'm always near.I'm everything you feel, see or hear.My spirit is free, but I'll never departas long as you keep me alive in your heart.

I'll never wander out of your sight-I'm the brightest star on a summer night.I'll never be beyond your reach-I'm the warm moist sand when you're at the beach.

I'm the colorful leaves when fall comes aroundand the pure white snow that blankets the ground.I'm the beautiful flowers of which you're so fond,The clear cool water in a quiet pond.

I'm the first bright blossom you'll see in the spring,The first warm raindrop that April will bring.I'm the first ray of light when the sun starts to shine, and you'll see that the face in the moon is mine.

When you start thinking there's no one to love you,you can talk to me through the Lord above you.I'll whisper my answer through the leaves on the trees, and you'll feel my presence in the soft summer breeze.

I'm the hot salty tears that flow when you weepand the beautiful dreams that come while you sleep.I'm the smile you see on a baby's face.Just look for me, friend, I'm everyplace!

Jack
How sad. He did so much for so many.
We will truly miss him.
I just wish he could have seen legal marijuana in California this November 2nd.
Maybe he can help from where he is now.http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2010/04/jack_herer_fatherof_marijuana.html
