  Attorney Who Forced Marijuana Issue Dies

Alaska -- A Homer lawyer and vocal marijuana proponent responsible for shaping Alaska's pot laws has died in Anchorage. Irwin Ravin died at Providence Alaska Medical Center of undisclosed causes, according to a hospital spokeswoman. He was 70 years old.Back in 1973, Ravin set into motion more than 35 years of legal tumult in Alaska when he arranged to have himself arrested with a stash of marijuana in his pocket so he could challenge the marijuana laws.
His case went to the Alaska Supreme Court, which ruled in the landmark 1975 case, Ravin v. Alaska, that the law banning home use and possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults violated a constitutional right to privacy. Ever since, lawmakers, activists and others have waged battled in court over the law and its conflicting implications."Supposedly you can possess it in your house," said Sgt. Denny Allen, supervisor of the Anchorage police Community Action Policing team. "But then the question becomes: how do you get it there?" The Ravin decision did not mention a specific amount one could possess, but in 1982 the Alaska Legislature determined less than four ounces was a personal stash unless there was evidence of sales or distribution. That amount was later reduced to one ounce. Words of Jack
On October 16 of 1990, Jack wrote these words to me in a paperback copy of, "The Emperor Wears No Clothes"."Teach (Hometown) all this information till we win.We can't win and change everything unless you know this knowledge so you can teach it with authority."I am still trying to live up to that.Legal like Jack wanted.

If I seem a bit disjointed...
You know what happened. I was reading up from the bottom and didn't realize that the subject had changed.It's a hard situation about your nephew, FoM. They know how you feel about medical cannabis, don't they? And they hear talk and they know it's "rumored" to help all sorts of things. They might mention it to you if they are interested. Do they use the Internet? Everyone is different. And they are, of course, under a lot of stress. You know some people might get angry and offended. Some people might not want to try it, but they wouldn't be mad that you had mentioned it, because they know you really care about them. If they are the type to get angry... you probably know that about them. Don't speak up, just to get your feelings hurt.Maybe they'll ask, and you can tell them you were hoping they'd ask. Or you can just print up what you can find and send them and say, "I found these studies I thought you might be interested in seeing."It's hard. I know. And don't forget, patients that are already afraid are afraid it might be detected in their regular medical blood and urine tests.

The Hemperor, Jack Herer has DiedBy Bonnie King, Salem-News.comThe global cannabis community mourns the loss of the great Jack Herer.The one and only Jack Herer will be missed forever.
(SALEM, Ore.) - The sad news has been confirmed. Jack Herer, author of Emperor Wears No Clothes and renowned around the world for hemp activism, has died at 11:17 a.m. today, in Eugene, Oregon.Jack Herer suffered a heart attack last September just after speaking on stage at the Portland HempStalk festival. The last seven months have proven to be a huge challenge to the man, with several health issues making his recovery complicated.Jack Herer's health has been poor lately, this last week there have been reports of the severity, and an outpouring of prayers on his behalf."It's shocking news, even after these last seven, trying months," said Paul Stanford, THCF Executive Director. "Jack Herer has been a good friend and associate of mine for over 30 years. I was there when he had the heart attack at our Hempstalk festival and I know he wouldn’t appreciate the quality of life he's endured these last months. Still he will be greatly missed. I honor his memory.""No other single person has done more to educate people all across the world about industrial hemp and marijuana as Jack Herer. If we can save just one sick person
They've thrown millions under the bus and in jail in order to save that proverbial "one child," but they'll throw their own family under the bus instead of letting them try something that won't hurt them and might help them live a better life.It's barbaric and unconscionable.The Reverend Bud Green

Storm Crow and BGreen
Thank you both very much. There is one benefit of cannabis that helps no matter what disease a person has. Cannabis makes the road of life go smoother. When the hard knocks come it helps put things in perspective. Even if that is all cannabis does I believe that is more then enough to allow people to use it that need it.

FoM, what type of MD are you speaking about
because that really is a generic term that covers a dozen different diseases all with different symptoms and treatments as well as different progression rates, which is the thing that cannabis can help with the greatest in my experience when it comes to genetic disorders especially autoimmune types as cannabinoids can actually slow the circadian rhythms of some diseases/syndromes if it is applied in prodigious amounts as maintaining blood plasma levels is goal as much as symptom relief? I would also suggest people whom are hesitant to use 'whole' cannabis to ask their MD's for prescriptions for Marinol(THC) and Cassamet(CBD) to try and see if it helps at all as they are both schedule 3 and fairly easy to get an md to try as unlike the antidepressants these don't cause liver or kidney damage? I have found some animals studies and will try to write a brief synopsis of what they are saying after you find out which symptoms we are trying to slow down or alleviate? peace, Steve Tuck

I went looking, but very little success... Sorry
I hit the usual sources (PubMed, ScienceDirect, Unbound, etc) and came up all but empty! PubMed had zilch, Unbound only does abstracts and had just 2- and one had nothing but the author info.... All I find are brief references, like Dr. Todd's list, but no actual studies aside from the Unbound one! I feel so dang frustrated that I can't be of more help! I even searched for posts at the larger forums, but found nothing of use. MS, I could have given you pages full! I am so sorry, FoM! But I'm continuing to search...

Bobby believes more like my sister politically and has tried to be what he feels is a good citizen. When people close their mind and listen too much to what is being said without doing any research it is sad. Questioning authority isn't a bad thing. Most of the people who have ever brought change have thought outside the box like Nelson Mandela.

Muscular Dystrophy
It's a horrible thing to happen to anyone. With all the attention and support finding a cure for it has gotten, it's hard to believe that no more advances have been made in the research of MD than have.Obviously, from the search results, a lot of people think cannabis is helpful in dealing with MD. I wish your nephew could give it a chance. It's sickening that Bobby's big brother... good old Uncle Sam, has told him he can't try it and worse, that he believes Uncle Sam has his best interests at the core of why the astounding herb is being prohibited.I noticed that New Jersey lists Muscular Dystrophy as one of the illnesses that will qualify a person to use cannabis legally.Lately, I've noticed a resurgence of the prohibitionist's using the "Pro-Pot" and "Pro-Drug" rhetoric again. It used to make me so angry. I'm not, or didn't used to be, "Pro-Pot". What I am is very, very "Anti-Drug War". But, over these last ten years or so and all I've learned... I don't mind being called "Pro-Pot" so much. It seems like a person would have to be pretty stupid, under the prevailing circumstances and knowledge that we have about the scientifically documented evidence that cannabis is, in fact, and can be, very beneficial. While I'm definitely still as "Anti Drug War" as ever and am not "Pro-Drug"... under the circumstances... go ahead... call me "Pro-Pot".

I have a serious problem and really need some help and I thought you might have some information. My one nephew that has Muscular Dystrophy is slipping rapidly. There are two other children in the family with the same MD but they aren't in as bad a shape. He is against any illegal drug use but he is slipping into a deep depression and has almost lost all use of his body. I need medical proof to present to my sister and my nephew. I did find some on the MD web site but I need more info before I can share it with them. Thanks for any help.

ah yes, the "vaccine" idea confirms my theory about the govt. taking control of people's lives by restricting vice.They don't want you to achieve pleasure on your own, from having sex or some good herb, those things are free. They need to you to lust after material goods in order to exploit you. This is the nature of consumerism.If you're happy just from using cannabis you won't take on $500,000 in debt to the banks.

I've seen con men before, they practice coming across so sincerly. A furrowed brow always works in these instances and old Gil is hamming it up!Gil is a lying dog and he knows it! He has practiced bureau-speak [budget manipulation] for so long he no longer sounds like one of us but one of "them". He no longer speaks in logic of even pretends too. he is obviously trying to manipulate my thinking so that his department can have more money to play with and when I say play I mean kill and cage!

I found this link to the current news in Tennessee.There is a video at the right and survey at the bottom.The last I checked "For" was 60% and "Against" was 40%.The rep Joey Hensley in the video speaking against is my rep. He is the one that equates cannabis with heroin.http://www.wsmv.com/index.htmlThanks for the link about the hearings greenmed.Legal like alcohol.

Hope
I believe we have passed the point of no return. I am so happy we have a few more years to get it done at the minimum. This Administration has given us the liberty to move forward and not be hassled every step along the way. From the bottom up not the top down! I am very calm about the steps we have been making and that wasn't the case before Obama.

News Comments
I can't keep up with all the news and comments around the web about drug policy, and especially cannabis policy, reform.Surely, the tipping point got tipped somewhere. It sure looks tipped to me.

You're welcome.Kucinich, Nadelmann and Kerlikowske - this has the potential of being a landmark meeting of the minds in terms of defining the advantages of the evidence based approach versus the failed drug war tactics of the past. Or something like that;) I look forward to it.

I really haven't kept up on what Mr. Nadelmann has done but this could be a first. Maybe someone else has followed him more closely and will answer your question. I am happy about Dennis Kucinich being there and having a say. I really like Dennis. He doesn't beat around the bush but speaks his mind.

Ethan Nadelmann testifying before Congress.
Has this ever happened before? I can't find any reference to earlier testimony in a quick check.This seems very good.

Congressional Hearing Looks at Drug War Policies
Wednesday: Congressional Hearing Looks at Obama Administration’s Drug War PoliciesDespite Significant Reforms, Administration’s 2011 Budget Criticized for Mirroring Bush’s Emphasis on Arrests and Incarceration over TreatmentWednesday: Congressional Hearing Looks at Obama Administration’s Drug War Policies Both Nation’s Drug Czar, Gil Kerkikowske, and Nation’s Leading Critic of Drug War, Ethan Nadelmann, to TestifyWASHINGTON - April 13 - The U.S. House Domestic Policy Subcommittee, chaired by Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), will hold a hearing Wednesday morning on the White House's drug war budget and forthcoming 2010 National Drug Control Strategy. The Director of the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (also known as the drug czar), Gil Kerlikowske, and the executive director of the anti-drug-war Drug Policy Alliance, Ethan Nadelmann, will both be testifying.Mr. Nadelmann testimony will focus on:•The drug war's flawed performance measures;
•The lop-sided ratio between supply and demand spending in the national drug budget;
•The lack of innovation in the drug czar's proposed strategies;
•The Administration's failure to adequately evaluate drug policies.
The hearing comes in the wake of significant drug policy reforms under the Obama Administration, including a directive urging federal law enforcement agencies to stop arresting medical marijuana patients and caregivers in compliance with their state's medical marijuana law, and the repeal of the two decade old federal syringe funding ban, which prohibited states from funding syringe exchange programs with federal money to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis C. Additionally, a few weeks ago a White House backed bi-partisan bill reforming the crack/powder cocaine sentencing disparity passed the U.S. Senate unanimously.The Administration's drug war budget, however, is still focused overwhelmingly on failed supply side policies and ignores important harm reduction measures. Director Kerlikowske told the Wall Street Journal last year that he doesn't like to use the term "war on drugs" because "[w]e're not at war with people in this country." Yet 64% of their budget - virtually the same as under the Bush Administration - focuses on largely futile interdiction efforts as well as arresting, prosecuting and incarcerating extraordinary numbers of people. Only 36% is earmarked for demand reduction. The budget also ignores life-saving harm reduction measures such as naloxone-distribution and heroin assisted treatment, widely viewed around the world as a necessary part of any balanced, evidenced based drug strategy."Congress and the Obama administration have broken with the costly and failed drug war strategies of the past in some important ways," said Ethan Nadelmann, executive director of the Drug Policy Alliance. "But the continuing emphasis on interdiction and law enforcement in the federal drug war budget suggest that ONDCP is far more wedded to the failures of the past than to any new vision for the future. I urge this committee to hold ONDCP and federal drug policy accountable to new criteria that focus on reductions in the death, disease, crime and suffering associated with both drugs and drug prohibition." What: Congressional hearing titled, "ONDCP's Fiscal Year 2011 National Drug Control Budget: Are We Still Funding a War on Drugs?"When: 10:00AM, Wednesday, April 14th.Where: 2154 Rayburn HOBDPA Network is the nation's leading organization working to end the war on drugs. We envision new drug policies based on science, compassion, health and human rights and a just society in which the fears, prejudices and punitive prohibitions of today are no more.Copyright: 2010 www.commondreams.orgURL: http://www.commondreams.org/newswire/2010/04/13-14
