Colorado -- A state senator said Thursday he wants to ask voters to impose a special tax on medical marijuana.Sen. Chris Romer, D-Denver, said he intends to amend a bill that creates regulations for medical-marijuana dispensaries to include a provision that places an excise tax on medical marijuana, similar to the special excise tax that already exists for alcohol.
Because of the Taxpayer's Bill of Rights, that provision — if first approved by lawmakers — must be put before the voters before the tax could be imposed.Romer wants to use the resulting revenue — which he hopes to be about $10 million to $15 million annually — to fund drug education programs for teens, substance- abuse treatment centers, and medical care for veterans and the poor. Romer said he is concerned the state's boom in medical-marijuana use could create a companion boom in recreational marijuana use among young people. To be FAIR.....
If we have "an excise tax on medical marijuana, similar to the special excise tax that already exists for alcohol"... Let's slap one on Oxycontin! And all other pain killers, too! After all, they are ALL pain killers with the potential of abuse just like cannabis (aside from those nasty side effects and that little problem with addiction!) Let's tax ALL the sick and dying on ALL their medications! They can afford it- they have to unless they want to live in pain, or die in agony! The politicians have to fix the budget somehow.... so we can have more money to throw down that economic "black hole" we call "war"! Doesn't matter if it it the War on Drugs or the one overseas- it is a huge waste of lives and money! If we did not have that huge financial drain on our country, what would things be like? What could the cost of a single "bunker-buster" bomb (about $114,000. each*) do for your local school? Think about it. PEACE NOW!*"The FY1997 budget request contained $18.4 million to procure 161 GBU-28 hard target penetrator bombs." (globalsecurity.org)
