Michigan -- Calling it a “pot dream come true for drug dealers,” state law enforcement, medical professionals and antidrug coalitions have launched a campaign to shoot down Proposal 1, the medical marijuana initiative on the November ballot. The initiative legalizes marijuana for pain relief from chronic illness as approved by a doctor. Users would carry state identification regarding their status, and would be exempt from prosecution. Proposal 1 also allows registered users to grow marijuana.
A Free Press poll of several hundred voters showed Michigan citizens support the Proposal. Until the announcement of the Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Kids campaign, Proposal 1 was virtually uncontested. The proposal is full of loopholes, said Michigan Court of Appeals Judge William Schuette, member of Citizens Protecting Michigan’s Kids. He said crime would increase, as evidenced by California’s medical marijuana laws, and teens would have greater access to drugs. There is no oversight on growing marijuana plants and “pot shops” could open up in strip malls.“We don’t want to California-ize Michigan with that problem,” he said. Four cities in Michigan currently allow the use of medical marijuana, Detroit, Ferndale, Ann Arbor and Traverse City. The proponents of Proposal 1 say the legislation is intended for cancer, HIV and glaucoma patients, for which there is some data suggesting marijuana’s active chemical, tetrahydrocannibol, or THC, helps alleviate pain.Source: Detroit Free Press (MI)Author: Megha Satyanarayana, Free Press Staff WriterPublished: October 2, 2008Copyright: 2008 Detroit Free PressWebsite: http://www.freep.com/Contact: letters freepress.comRelated Articles & Web Site:Stop Arresting Patientshttp://www.stoparrestingpatients.org/Yes on Prop 1: Allow Relief Marijuana May Offerhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread24201.shtmlGroup Will Kick Off ‘No’ Campaignhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread24199.shtml

They never learn
What is it with these prohibitionists? It didn't work in Ancient Rome, didn't work in the Middle Ages, definitely didn't work in the 1920s and it won't work today. When will they wake up?

Let Them Burn Their Money
What a gross waste of time, fighting a marijuana initiative. We are going to pass it sooner or later anyway, might as well be sooner. Some people are soooo slow, and a tad backwards.

It's about 'the children' again ...
But it's not! In reality it's about themselves and they are using the kids as bait! How clever and how dishonest and deceptive. But, ... this is how they have been doing things for centuries ... And the result? Today's drug wars with kids as innocent victims. My best example for sanity remains, the Netherlands, where usage rates are the lowest in the world compared to any country. Please look at this PDF from the recent conference (The Beckley Foundation) in the UK:http://www.beckleyfoundation.org/seminar/wiardaainsworth.pdfAnd or see the graphs on www.LegaliseIt.com at:
