Aspen, CO -- Visit the John Denver Sanctuary and you’d think the iconic singer never smoked pot. John Denver will live forever in the minds and hearts of Coloradoans, but the lyrics etched in stone obelisks at the riverside park have been cleaned of scandalous references. In the song “Poems, Prayers and Promises,” the verse about how Denver has “known my lady’s pleasures” is missing. And instead of reading, “my friends and my old lady sit and pass a pipe around” as in the original, the stone reads, “my friends and my old lady sit and watch the sun go down.”
The last verse of “Rocky Mountain High,” which includes the line “Friends around the campfire and everybody’s high” is conspicuously absent also.“The lyrics were chosen by the family and provided to us in that way,” said Stephen Ellsperman, the city’s parks and open space director. The sanctuary was completed in 2000.Denver’s brother, Ron Deutschendorf, was shocked to hear the lyrics were altered.“My brother didn’t write it that way, and he never sang it that way,” Deutschendorf said. “He’d be pissed like I’m pissed. It’s just not right.”Deutschendorf said he remembers the 1972 controversy when Denver admitted he smokes marijuana in Australia.“If you’re going to make a tribute to someone, you should do your best to be accurate,” Deutschendorf said.Denver’s brother said he had nothing to do with the creation of the monument, adding that the changes sounded like “Annie’s stuff.”Annie Denver, Denver’s ex-wife, could not be reached for comment. The sanctuary was funded partly by private contributions and the city of Aspen. The stones are in a grassy amphitheater overlooking a Roaring Fork River riparian zone. The site was chosen as a tribute to Denver’s desire to “foster environmental responsibility,” Ellsperman said.“It’s meant to be an interactive sanctuary more than a memorial — a place where people can explore,” Ellsperman said. Each year, volunteers come to the park and do upkeep, add plants and clean the popular spot, and the sanctuary is a “very popular attraction” in summer, Ellsperman said.“People gravitate toward it,” Ellsperman said.Deutschendorf was quick to point out that in the line of tributes to his brother, the Windstar Foundation planned to release a digitally remastered tribute album featuring Denver playing in Russia.“It’s just John and his guitar,” Deutschendorf said, and you can hear every twang of the strings and trill of his voice. It took a long time to find the right organization to produce the album that would respect John’s music, Deutschendorf said.“John deserves this kind of class act because he was a class act,” Deutschendorf said.Charles Agar’s e-mail address is: cagar aspentimes.comNewshawk: The GCWSource: Aspen Times (CO)Author: Charles AgarPublished: October 13, 2007Copyright: 2007 Aspen Times Contact: mail aspentimes.comWebsite: http://www.aspentimes.com/CannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/cannabis.shtml

Thank you. That makes me feel good. We stayed at the Wycombe Inn that was owned by his father and partner. They catered the train from New Hope. It was cool to see the train pull up and stop and the great food was amazing.http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/news/193-07262007-1383441.html

I am so glad you got to spend time with your son during that time. From how you speak of him, I can tell he was a very special, caring and wise person. I'm certain that he is still smiling at you and is proud of all that you do to help change things for others. There are so many days when reading CNews really picks me up when I feel alone - a sentiment I think is surely shared by many readers. Thank you FoM and all.

How I came to know about New Hope was from my son. When he was getting very sick we moved to his home in Washington Crossing, Pa to be with him and we had time to do things and he told us to go to New Hope and that we would love it and we did.

Those are some beautiful photographs. I'd like to visit there when the leaves are turning... perhaps next year. I will let you know if I go. I'll remember to drop by River of Life, too!

Let me know if you do get to see New Hope. I loved it. There was a progressive health food store in the area called River of Life that had good books and lots of knowledge and info on Cannabis in the books.

Thanks for the recommendation of New Hope. I enjoy travel and have done a lot over the years, especially as a child and youth. That opportunity was a great gift from my parents, bless 'em. It seems now I have either the funds or the time, but not both together :)Peaceful, mellow and artful places really draw me. Pennsylvania is not that far either. I'll remember it. Thanks again!

No, I don't think you said they did, but I think that's what the prohibitionists are riding on, mustn't let the children know that cannabis is good for adults.Let's keep saying it, anyhow, cannabis is good for adults.

I don't believe that it's right to test a person after they are dead but they do. I don't know if John Denver was high when he died but he was known for going off the deep end and that was one of the reasons he wasn't performing like he was when he was younger. Alcohol was a problem with him. I didn't know about the cocaine but they do go together in that age group of musicians. People who like to drink often do coke so they can drink more I heard on Politically Incorrect years ago.

Forgetting to put enough fuel in his tank.
People do, all to often, for all sorts of reasons, and no reason at all, forget to remember things, a lot. Sometimes to their sorrow...and ours, too. Some days I'm more forgetful than others. Everyone has those days. Probably that day, he was more rushed, or irritated, anticipatory, or just thinking more about something else, than he should have been.Bad stuff happens sometimes...and it can happen under or not under the influence...of anything. That's what makes me so mad about the insult and disrespect of testing dead people for substances after an accident of some sort. Test or not...substance or not...bad things can happen, and under or not under the influence may not have had a thing to do with it. There is no way of really knowing...and it's an insult to the dead and their families to disrespect them that way.

I said they didn't? I don't think so. I certainly didn't mean to say such a thing. Maybe it was my reference to their (the people so "wise" as to lie and change the words of the actual song of the songwriter they are supposed to be honoring) apparent idea of "protecting" us and our children. If you aren't honest with children, they will just consider you to be dishonest. Most of us, at least I do, want our children to be honest. Being dishonest with them isn't the way to incline them to be honest themselves.

Did you know the practice of destroying "words written in stone" dates back to the ancient Egyptians (and maybe before that). For instance Queen Hatshetsup's legacy written in stone carvings around her capital were completely chipped clean by her male successors. Just goes to show that the words "primitive" and "progress" mostly refer to myths.

How dare someone pervert those
sweet words of comfort and solace that his songs brought to his listeners.By the way, it wasn't his relatives that perverted the lyrics from the original ones, from what I read in this article...or maybe another one. It was someone else. Someone else who thought themselves "High and Mighty", and "Wise" to do so. But they weren't. They were liars and deceivers, big time. They did it for our own good though...you know...and the good of the "children", because the rest of us aren't as "smart" as they are. They think themselves "good", better than the rest of us, but they do the bidding of the lying spirit. They think it's good to lie and deceive...and especially to lie to and deceive the "children". They are sick and dangerous. Deceiving spirits are their masters.

Rocky Mountain High
I lived in Aspen for 4 years in the late 80's. It was a time of coke, XTC, ganj, girls, and skiing.
My girlfriend at the time went out to party, and came back to our apartment (very late) with John Denver and a foxy blonde friend of ours. John had this big glass vial of blow, and asked if I wanted some.
Since I was pissed at my girlfriend at the time, I wasn't in the mood to do a bunch of lines.
However, in hindsight, I should have got off the couch, grabbed a mirror & a blade, and had him sing "Rocky Mountain High" as we snorted the night away.

Re: MPP Press Release
I thought this comment by Bruce applicable as well as humorous:"Every year in late October or early November, the Attorney General announces a record number of plant seizures and pretends that it means something, but the achievement is entirely phony," Bruce Mirken, MPP's communications director, said in a news release. "It's just like saying, 'Our crew set a record by bailing 200 gallons of water out of the Titanic,' while ignoring the fact that the ship still sank. Rather than the usual press release that pretends to see success amid overwhelming evidence of failure, we're challenging Mr. Brown to provide evidence that CAMP actually accomplishes anything useful."

Who is responsible for all of our woes?
THE 545 PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE FOR ALL OF AMERICA'S WOES
BY CHARLEY REESE (APFN Modified 10/15/07)
http://www.apfn. org/apfn/ 545.htm (Orig Text)Politicians are the only people in the world who create problems and then campaign against them.Have you ever wondered why, if both the Democrats and the Republicans are against deficits, we have deficits? Have you ever wondered why, if all the politicians are against inflation and high taxes, we have inflation and high taxes? You and I don't propose a federal budget. The president does. You and I don't have the Constitutional authority to vote on appropriations. The House of Representatives does. You and I don't write the tax code. Congress does. You and I don't set fiscal policy. Congress does. You and I don't control monetary policy. The Federal Reserve Bank does. One hundred senators, 435 congressmen, one president and nine Supreme Court justices - 545 human beings out of the 300 million - are directly, legally, morally and individually responsible for the domestic problems that plague this country.I excluded the members of the Federal Reserve Board because that problem was created by the Congress. In 1913, Congress delegated its Constitutional duty to provide a sound currency to a federally chartered but private central bank.I excluded all but the special interests and lobbyists for a sound reason. They have no legal authority. They have no ability to coerce a senator, a congressman or a president to do one cotton-picking thing. I don't care if they offer a politician $1 million dollars in cash. The politician has the power to accept or reject it.No matter what the lobbyist promises, it is the legislation' s responsibility to determine how he votes.A CONFIDENCE CONSPIRACYDon't you see how the con game that is played on the people by the politicians? Those 545 human beings spend much of their energy convincing you that what they did is not their fault. They cooperate in this common con regardless of party. What separates a politician from a normal human being is an excessive amount of gall. No normal human being would have the gall of A SPEAKER, who stood up and criticized G.W. BUSH for creating deficits. The president can only propose a budget. He cannot force the Congress to accept it. The Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land, gives sole responsibility to the House of Representatives for originating appropriations and taxes.Who is the speaker of the House. SHe is the leader of the majority party. SHe and fellow Democrats, not the president, can approve any budget they want. If the president vetos it, they can pass it over his veto.REPLACE SCOUNDRELSIt seems inconceivable to me that a nation of 300 million cannot replace 545 people who stand convicted -- by present facts - of incompetence and irresponsibility.I can't think of a single domestic problem, from an unfair tax code to defense overruns, that is not traceable directly to those 545 people. When you fully grasp the plain truth that 545 people exercise power of the federal government, then it must follow that what exists is what they want to exist. If the tax code is unfair, it's because they want it unfair. If the budget is in the red, it's because they want it in the red. If the Marines are in IRAQ, it's because they want them in IRAQ.There are no insoluble government problems. Do not let these 545 people shift the blame to bureaucrats, whom they hire and whose jobs they can abolish; to lobbyists, whose gifts and advice they can reject; to regulators, to whom they give the power to regulate and from whom they can take it.Above all, do not let them con you into the belief that there exist disembodied mystical forces like "the economy," "inflation" or "politics" that prevent them from doing what they take an oath to do.Those 545 people and they alone are responsible. They and they alone have the power. They and they alone should be held accountable by the people who are their bosses - provided they have the gumption to manage their own employees. This article was taken from the Orlando Sentinel Star newspaperhttp://www.apfn. org/apfn/ 545.htm
