YUMA, Ariz. U.S. Border Patrol agents in Arizona apprehended twice as many people in the last quarter of 1998 as they did in the same period the prior year, another sign of an ongoing shift in illegal immigration.
From October through December, 13,742 illegal immigrants were apprehended, Yuma Border Patrol sector spokesman Al Casillas said. The agency reported 6,144 apprehensions for the last three months of 1997. With the border patrols tightening illegal immigration in El Paso and San Diego, people looking to enter the country could be saying, ``Let's try elsewhere,'' Casillas said. Yuma is not the only place feeling the brunt, he said. A record year for apprehensions appears likely in the patrol's Tucson sector, agency officials said. Tucson led in U.S. Border Patrol arrests during the last fiscal year with 387,406. Most enter near Nogales and Douglas. Casillas said illegal crossers aren't always empty-handed. Marijuana seizures for the Yuma sector increased more than six times during the last three months of 1998. For the last three months of 1997, agents seized 964 pounds of marijuana compared to 6,270 pounds for the same period last year.
