Anti-Drug Group Fights Medical-Marijuana Bill

Santa Fe, NM -- The founder of a New York-based anti-drug group came to the Capitol on Friday to persuade legislators to vote against a bill that would make marijuana legal for patients suffering from some serious medical conditions.Steven Steiner of Dads and Moms Against Drug Dealers said that passage of SB258 -- which is scheduled to be considered today by the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee -- would lead to more drug abuse in the state.
Ironically, Steiner's group is partly funded by the company that makes the drug that killed his teenage son."Five years ago, I lost my 19-year-old son," Steiner told a reporter. The drug that killed Steven Steiner Jr. was OxyContin, a prescription narcotic that is legal. "But marijuana played a major part in his death," Steiner said. "There's no doubt in my mind that marijuana is a gateway drug."He repeated a common claim by medical-marijuana opponents that drug-liberalization advocates are using cancer and AIDS sufferers to pass medical laws, which, opponents say, is a first step to legalization of marijuana.Backers of SB258, including Gov. Bill Richardson and senators from both political parties, have argued the bill provides sufficient safeguards to prevent widespread abuse and would help only people who are in serious pain.According to DAMADD's Web site, Perdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, is a sponsor of the organization. Several other large pharmaceutical companies, including Jannsen, Bristol-Meyers, Roche, Alpharma, UCB, Endo, Cephalon, Teva and Boehringer Ingelheim, also support DAMADD. "Big (pharmaceuticals), they see what's happening," Steiner said. "They gave us funding unrestricted."Steiner said his son wasn't using OxyContin correctly. "My son crushed it up and snorted it," he said. The pharmaceutical industry never has been visibly active in opposing medical-marijuana legislation in New Mexico. But the industry -- which contributed more than $97,000 to New Mexico political campaigns in 2002 and more than $56,000 in 2004 -- stands to lose money if marijuana became a free and legal treatment. Prescription drugs to combat nausea and other symptoms, as some supporters say marijuana can do, may cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars a month.Steiner appeared at a news conference with Rep Bill Rehm, R-Albuquerque. Rehm, a former narcotics detective with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, said he believes the medical-marijuana bill would result in more marijuana users driving vehicles."There's no requirement in the bill about having (marijuana-growing facilities) in close proximity to daycare centers or schools," he said. "There's nothing in the bill about smoking marijuana and driving a school bus or teaching school." You're probably right. It does seem like he's being cruel to his dead son. Very cruel, and the young man can't say a word in his defense or humiliation.Furthermore, humiliating the young man after death won't stop anyone else from making the same mistake.

SS is Blind.
It almost seems like he's torturing his child in public...over and over again....every day....day and night.-Hope.Hope, he is torturing his son's existance more in Death, than he did in Life. People who love power hate it when their children try to break away from that control. His son cried out for relief from this torturous controling parent, and he found it. Permanently. Now his father is proudly walking hand in hand with his son's murder accomplices, who want to control more than just THEIR children. I wonder how much stock it took to buy his soul? His son did not get a chance to defend his reason for drug use. I think the boy was standing up to his overbaring father the only way he had the strength to. He was afraid to talk to his father about anything, probably. It is a chilling feeling when a power parent begins drilling you with questions you know if you answer honestly will get you grounded, or worse. What else is a kid to do but run the other way from that? I know about this. I had a controlling step parent, until at twelve, I stood up. All the way up. Stiener is ANGRY at his son. He is trying to punish him.-Whig.And doing a thorough job, Whig. His heart is full of hatred and unable to love, though he may greatly desire to. The only way he can release that hate in his heart is to admit it is there. To do that would go against everything this man (?) has stood for his whole life. Obeying The Laws of Man. Just like the SS in Nazi Germany. Well, it IS his initials.I know that's being hard, but I recognize something about this situation. I don't think his son intentionally OD'd. Being controlled makes your spirit soar a bit higher than others when you find the freedom to do so. He was the opposite of his father, more akin to us. People who are in control of others, or desire to be, can't stand it when people TAKE their freedom. It means loss of control, loss of power. That is why the Government hates US so badly.

Wage peace on war. END CANNABIS PROHIBITION NOW!

Off Topic: Starving Polar Bears Shame Bush To Act
February 11, 2006 Starving polar bears are presenting an unprecedented challenge to George Bush's refusal to take action over global warming - and may succeed where environmentalists and other governments have failed in getting him to curb pollution. Despite the President's obdurate stance on climate change, the US administration last week took the first steps towards officially listing the bear as an endangered species. The Arctic ice on which the iconic animal lives is melting away as the world heats up and, if the listing is finalised, the Bush administration will be obliged to modify its pollution policies to try to save the bear. The move comes as the President faces attack for the first time over global warming from some of his strongest allies. Evangelical Christian leaders last week took out TV ads urging action, while, in Britain, Tony Blair has warned that the world has less than seven years to get to grips with climate change.Complete Article: http://news.independent.co.uk/environment/article344931.ece

Nobody seems to know what is *really* happening. People are flinging accusations and speculating wildly, but very little confirmable info is available."RC" does not appear to have been arrested as was reported earlier, based on the fact that there were no pot-related arrests in the time period and jurisdiction in question. That can be be checked in Canada even more transparently than in the US evidently, and there is no record of such arrest. That leads to more questions. Maybe he was raided, but not arrested based on a slimy deal made on the spot to cooperate? Maybe no raid at all? No one knows. Attempts to ping the server seem to show it's still plugged in but not operational. It's all very weird. Many, many people are frustrated and angry. There is no evidence of US involvement *at this point*. Canadian seed breeders and growers seem to be most at risk right now. One guy has come out and `outed' "RC" with his real name (!!) and accused him of selling out the entire community to save his own self, but again, it's just one guy's allegation and there's no real proof yet.The thing I'm most curious about is whether there is any international jurisdictional issue that prevents Canadian authorities from just handing "intelligence" on the big bad closet pot growers over to US authorities. The polyanna in me hopes so and thinks so, but that may be naive...

This is maybe the main problem with people trying to mix business with cannabis. Money overtakes truth. Doesn't matter which of them is right, or what is happening, people see what they want to see because it's in their interest to see things that way. Just like how the Bush admin could only see WMDs in Iraq because they wanted to.

Good news
At least I think it is. It's in Europe but every good thing said about Marijuana regardless of where it is is a fantastic thing.A group of politicians and drugs experts is making a new attempt at decriminalising cannabis in Switzerland.
Eighteen months after parliament threw out a similar plan the committee has collected enough signatures to force a nationwide vote on the issue.

House Committee Shelves Medical Marijuana Bill
***February 11, 2006 SANTA FE (AP) - A House panel has shelved a Senate-passed bill that would have allowed patients suffering from illnesses like cancer or AIDS to use marijuana prescribed by a doctor to alleviate their pain. The move likely kills the bill for the legislative session that ends Thursday. The Agriculture and Water Resources Committee tabled the measure on a 4-3 vote on Saturday.Law enforcement officers applauded the committee’s decision. They said the proposal would have caused legal problems because it conflicted with federal law and would have increased illegal marijuana use and growth in the state.Democratic Senator Cisco McSorley of Albuquerque sponsored the bill.He says it’s not a move to legalize marijuana use in New Mexico, but that it’s about helping an estimated 250 severely ill patients. Prohibition didn't help
the sons of at least two old timers here who watched their sons suffer sick and die from the diseases of Leukemia and Aids. That's hard. Even a hard guy like Steiner surely suffered from his son's death. Then again...those pictures. I wouldn't do that to anyone's dignity and certainly not, even the memory of, the dignity of a beloved child. It almost seems like he's torturing his child in public...over and over again....every day....day and night.Let's spend the WoD money to find a cure for all cancers...especially those commonly striking our very young people.

I agreed with everything you said except this:"Steven Steiner, if you are reading this pleas do us all a huge favor and go crush and snort a big pile of Oxy. The world would be better off without you."Please don't stoop to their level. Hatred is the problem. They may hate us, but we should not hate them back in return.I know it's hard not to hate when people are putting our friends in jail and making us suffer for lack of medicine, so they can sell us their poisons. We can and should speak against this, but most of them are just brainwashed victims themselves, including probably Mr. Steiner. They don't know the malice they spew. And those who DO know will have their reckoning in time, and they deserve our pity more than anyone when they are made to come to terms with what they've consciously done.

It's Plain to See
According to DAMADD's Web site, Perdue Pharma, the manufacturer of OxyContin, is a sponsor of the organization.Several other large pharmaceutical companies, including Jannsen, Bristol-Meyers, Roche, Alpharma, UCB, Endo, Cephalon, Teva and Boehringer Ingelheim, also support DAMADD. "Big (pharmaceuticals), they see what's happening," Steiner said. "They gave us funding unrestricted."Oh my God, I think I'm going to vomit. So this Steven Steiner of "Dads and Moms Against Drug Dealers" is taking money from the very company which made the drug that his son overdosed on so they can maintain the prohibition of a plant which has never killed anyone? I find it hard to find any sympathy for this idiot. It's really a wonder his kid didn't blow his brains out years before with a father like Steiner. Sorry if that seems cold-hearted but he is by far the biggest hypocrite that I've ever heard of in my entire life! There are folks who absolutely need cannabis to simply make it through the day and these greedheads are more interested in profits than the people they are supposedly trying to protect. Give me a friggin' break!!! Steven Steiner, if you are reading this pleas do us all a huge favor and go crush and snort a big pile of Oxy. The world would be better off without you. This is the most apalling article that I've ever read. It's plain to see that this is all about GREED. How about a boycott of Perdue Pharma, Jannsen, Bristol-Meyers, Roche, Alpharma, UCB, Endo, Cephalon, Teva and Boehringer Ingelheim.

Off Topic: Reinventing Criminal Justice
This week a House subcommittee held hearings on a bill, the Second Chance Act, which is meant to deal with the problems that prisoners encounter on their reentry into society and also with their need for substance abuse treatment. The concern over prisoners and recidivism is justified. Though national crime rates declined steadily over the past decade, the Bureau of Justice Statistics reports that the percentage of released prisoners re-arrested within three years increased from 62.5 percent in 1983 to 67.5 percent in 1994. And given that offenders are arrested for only a fraction of the crimes they commit, even this depressing statistic is an underestimate. Few would dispute that the correctional system must be changed. But how?Complete Article: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/02/10/AR2006021001699.html

I was glad to notice they mentioned that about Steiner's group in the first paragraph. The prohibitionists should get used to getting some back of what they've been giving for so long.

analysis
summary: drugwar_propaganda = 100%
[2]
Steven Steiner of Dads and Moms Against Drug Dealers said that passage of SB258 -- which is scheduled to be considered today by the House Agriculture and Water Resources Committee -- would lead to more drug abuse in the state .
(Sentence 2) re: "Drug Dealers", "Dealers" - Prohibition rhetoric often attempts to associate hated groups with targeted drugs. (Hated Groups (propaganda theme 1) http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/propaganda/theme1.htm#1 ) re: "drug abuse" - Prohibition propaganda claims that all use of any "drug" is abuse. (Use is Abuse (propaganda theme 4) http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/propaganda/theme4.htm#alluseisabuse )

[3]
Ironically, Steiner's group is partly funded by the company that makes the drug that killed his teenage son .
(Sentence 3) re: "teenage" - "Since the Harrison Act of 1914, the user and the seller of illicit drugs have both been characterized as evil, criminal, insane, and always in search of new victims, the victims are characterized as young children." [W.White,1979] (Children Corrupted (propaganda theme 5) http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/propaganda/theme5.htm#5 )

[7]
"There's no doubt in my mind that marijuana is a gateway drug."
(Sentence 7) re: "gateway drug", "gateway" - Prohibition propaganda is rich with claims targeted drugs 'lead to' something even more frightful. (Use is Abuse, Gateway (propaganda theme 4) http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/propaganda/theme4.htm#4 )

[8]
He repeated a common claim by medical-marijuana opponents that drug-liberalization advocates are using cancer and AIDS sufferers to pass medical laws, which, opponents say, is a first step to legalization of marijuana .
(Sentence 8)
re: "legalization", "legalization of marijuana", "step to legalization" - Any mention of lessening the harshness of drug laws is portrayed as a sinful "legalization". Only total prohibition (or more jailings) will be righteous. (Total Prohibition or Access (propaganda theme 7) http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/propaganda/theme7.htm#7 )

[21]
Rehm, a former narcotics detective with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, said he believes the medical-marijuana bill would result in more marijuana users driving vehicles .
(Sentence 21) re: "marijuana users" - Prohibitionists try to hammer in the idea that 'all use is abuse.' The rhetoric of prohibition needs to deny that many people can use currently illegal drugs without abusing them. (Use is Abuse (propaganda theme 4) http://drugpolicycentral.com/bot/pg/propaganda/theme4.htm#alluseisabuse )

Out of Staters
In nearly every medical marijuana campaign, the groups opposed claimed that the effort is being funded/pushed by out-of-state groups.Apparently, they never notice the drug czars from DC and DaMADDs coming in from NY. It wouldn't surprise me if the Drug Czar spends more money opposing it then the New Mexican group raised to get it on the ballet.

News Article from Snipped Source
Bills Would Deny Workers Benefits If Drugs, Alcohol Involved ***By Howard Fischer, Capitol Media Services February 11, 2006 State lawmakers have given preliminary approval to a measure denying workers’ compensation benefits to employees injured or killed on the job who test positive for alcohol or illegal drugs.

The bills, HCR2004 and HB2111, say in essence that workers who have drugs or alcohol in their system are presumed to have caused their own injury. That would make them ineligible for benefits unless the employee or survivors prove after the accident that drug or alcohol use was “not a substantial cause’’ of the injury or death. The measure, sponsored by Rep. John McComish, R-Phoenix, is backed by employer groups who say the risk of being denied benefits will help convince workers to come to the job straight and sober. They also said the legislation would encourage more companies to regularly test workers. Complete Article: http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=58936

News Article from KVOA.com
Voters May Be Asked To Decide Injury Coverage Issue for Workers***February 11, 2006Arizona legislators are moving to ask voters to again let workers' compensation insurers deny benefits to injured workers whose drug or alcohol use contributed to causing the accident. The move comes at the urging of business groups in the wake of a state Supreme Court ruling last year that overturned a 1999 law promoting drug-free workplaces by restricting benefits to substance-impaired workers. The court said the law clashed with the Arizona Constitution's mandate for payment of benefits for on-the-job injuries without consideration of fault. I think I actually know a couple of those folks too. More bad news from Europe...
JOINT OPERATION John Hooper Reports on the Government's Efforts to Force Through a New, Zero-Tolerance Drugs Policy Anyone planning a holiday in Italy and thinking of enjoying a quiet spliff while, let's say, watching the sun go down over the Bay of Naples, had better think again. A vote in the Italian parliament yesterday means that a new, zero-tolerance policy on drugs is almost certain to become law within the next couple of months. With the aroma of defiantly smoked cannabis floating in the air outside, lawmakers approved a measure that abolishes the distinction between hard and soft drugs and makes possession, as well as dealing, a criminal offence.

Steven Steiner
It appears the pharms OWN him.His son overdosed on a pharmaceutical so he works for the pharmeceutical company now to keep people from having access to a safer medicine? Very peculiar. If we could pay him enough money, Steiner might come over to our side. That sounds cruel, but I've been to his website.

Let me see…
if I understand this correctly. Steiner said his son wasn't using OxyContin correctly. "My son crushed it up and snorted it," he said. His son snorts a highly addictive “legal” prescription drug and somehow marijuana is to blame? The drug that killed Steven Steiner Jr. was OxyContin, a prescription narcotic that is legal. "But marijuana played a major part in his death," Steiner said.If you are reading this Mr. Steiner my sympathies go out to you for the loss of your son. However, denying cannabis relief to adults in pain will not bring him back nor prevent anyone else who has an addiction problem like your son, obviously had, from death. Sorry to be so blunt here but does everyone else see how effective the governments propganda stigmatizing cannabis can be? I mean really how far or long can this keep up? Why not blame marijuana for everything...My hair fell out. Marijuana caused it.My kid ran away from home. Marijuana caused it.My teenage son was street racing, crashed, and died. I know marijuana was behind it.The Iraninans want to process uranium. They must be smoking marijuana.Illegal immigrants crossed the border today. Must be a sinister plot to spread marijuana.Someone came in second in the Olympics. Probably because their marijuana use kept them out of first place.I can't find my car keys. It's marijuana's fault. My grandmother passed away from old age. I know she would have lived longer if it weren't for the scourge of marijuana on this planet.Whatever happened to responsible journalism in this country? Did marijuana screw that up too?

They see what's happening
"Several other large pharmaceutical companies, including Jannsen, Bristol-Meyers, Roche, Alpharma, UCB, Endo, Cephalon, Teva and Boehringer Ingelheim, also support DAMADD. "Big (pharmaceuticals), they see what's happening," Steiner said. "They gave us funding unrestricted.""Others see what’s happening too. I wonder if he ever feels like others are using him for profit, does he even know? All Aboard!!! Caution!!! Do not enter if you have limited time. It might take a while to get back to the station.
