Telluride Icy To Pot Issue

Telluride -- Walk the streets and alleys in this funky resort town, and you're likely to catch a whiff of pot smoke trailing from a passing bike, wafting from the back door of a restaurant or clinging to the fleece jackets of a group of 20-somethings taking in the sun on Colorado Avenue. This live-and-let-live locale has been immortalized in the Eagles' drug anthem "Smuggler's Blues." The sheriff has authored two books criticizing the nation's war on drugs. And it wasn't that long ago that the town board included a dreadlocked member known as Rasta Stevie.
"This is a pretty anti-establishment community. You fit in here by being abnormal," said resident John Albertson. But that doesn't mean that a ballot issue to ease marijuana enforcement in this high-altitude hamlet is a big hit with the locals. Even residents who might be expected to champion the measure, which calls for ranking possession of small amounts of marijuana by adults the lowest priority for the Telluride Marshal's Department, are refusing to back ballot Question 200. "To me, it's a bad idea," said San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters, who has made national waves as a libertarian critic of drug laws he calls ineffectual. The complaints about Question 200 center on who is backing it, whether it is necessary and what kind of outside drug-enforcement cross hairs it might place this town in if it were to pass. "We already don't chase marijuana people down. We don't go looking for them," said town board member Mark Buchsieb, who calls the measure unnecessary. The issue has been pushed by a Denver-based nonprofit called Sensible Colorado. Brian Vicente, the group's executive director, said the measure was introduced in Telluride because "it is a forward-thinking community where almost everyone you talk to says the war on drugs has been a failure." Vicente said his group is not affiliated with Safer Alternative for Enjoyable Recreation (SAFER), the force behind an initiative that would make it legal for anyone 21 or older to possess an ounce or less of marijuana in Denver, although Sensible Colorado supports the cause. Dr. Phil eats "Quacker Oats" "It's for t
First of all: Dr. Phil is a quack in my opinion and dangerous too. Remember, the biggest Colorado forest fire was started when a scorned woman decided to burn all the letters from some guy because Dr. Phil said this was a way to get over a relationship. I'm sick of the "Dr. Philling" of America - the "momma didn't breast feed you; so, you've got to start the 'healing' process so one day you can have 'closure.'"Secondly: I don't think the Eagles's did Smuggler's Blues. Wasn't that made by Glenn Frey as a solo artist?

OT: "THE GRIEF OF POT"
I found this interesting and I had not heard it before:"In Mexico, there was a drink known as potacion de guaya, or "drink of grief," which was wine or brandy in which marijuana buds were steeped," writes Ian Lendler in Alcoholica Esoterica. "When referring to marijuana in America, the potacion part got shortened, which is where we get the slang term 'pot.'" http://www.mapinc.org/drugnews/v05/n1672/a05.html?397

What's up with the headline?
Icy reception? It sounds like the only people they could find who were against it (and that's a stretch) are a few people employed by the town government. It's interesting to see this stuff play in Colorado, the state is split right up the middle. Denver and everything east is just like St. Louis or Indianapolis. Midwestern to core. In the mountains, it's like Woodstock. Many towns and cities where cannabis is a central element of society and culture. Anyone who's skiied a lot out west, hung out with locals, or been a local, knows that many of these ski "bums" lead very spiritual lives, and the 2 main compenents of that life are outdoor sports and cannabis.Of course, in the United States, we go to desparate lengths to brainwash any culture out of people at a young age - it gets in the way of consumerism, the altar at which we are all programmed to bow down and worship. Gaining spiritual fulfillment from backcountry adventure and a medicinal herb sure ain't going to make anyone rich! It's clear where this newspaper is based. The place that the mountain people refer to as "Mile High Sh***y".

That's what made me wonder why he minded. I don't need to know but the Sheriff questioning it made me wonder what he knows that we don't know.

I was on the phone talking to my sister and wasn't watching the news but I see now some of what is going on. Why wasn't Rove charged. Maybe I need to turn up the volume on the news and follow it a little closer but this really is hard for me to handle. Maybe there will be more to come. Watergate started slow too.

"The complaints about Question 200 center on who is backing it, whether it is necessary and what kind of outside drug-enforcement cross hairs it might place this town in if it were to pass."It seems to simply be guilt by association. I'm disappointed in the sheriff.

Meds Today, in 2000 B.C. Surprisingly Comparable
Excerpt: The doctors had a system of putting plant material to burn on a hooded brazier, then telling the patient to stick his head under the hood to inhale the smoke. Scurlock said she is certain they used medical marijuana in that way."It seems to have been used to relieve pain, as an anti-depressant and nausea," she said. "It seems also to have been used to treat impotence, but they recognized that it was a double-edged sword. It could create desire, but too much could be the cause of impotence."Complete Article: http://www.sunherald.com/mld/sunherald/news/nation/13020415.htm
