Cannabis May Offer Novel Approach For Brain Tumors, Journal SaysJuly 29, 2004 - Madrid, SpainMadrid, Spain: Compounds in marijuana inhibit malignant brain tumor growth in animals, and may provide a potential therapy for human glioma patients, according to a clinical review appearing in the September issue of Neuropharmacology.
"Current therapeutic strategies for the treatment of [gliomas] are usually ineffective or just palliative," researchers from the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Madrid's Complutense University wrote. "During the last few years, several studies have shown that cannabinoids ... slow the growth of different types of tumours, including gliomas, in laboratory animals. Cannabinoids induce apoptosis (programmed cell death) of glioma cells [in vitro.] In addition, cannabinoid treatment inhibits angiogenesis (growth) of gliomas in vivo. Remarkably, cannabinoids kill glioma cells selectively and can protect non-transformed glial cells from death. These and other findings reviewed here might set the basis for a potential use of cannabinoids in the management of gliomas."Last year, a clinical review in the journal Nature Reviews Cancer made similar recommendations, noting that cannabinoids possess a "favorable drug safety profile" and have shown in clinical trials to inhibit various forms of cancerous tumors, including gliomas, lung carcinoma, breast cancer, skin cancer, thyroid cancer, lymphoma, and prostate cancer. For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Senior Policy Analyst, at (202) 483-5500. The proposal also seeks to eliminate criminal penalties on the use and possession of marijuana-associated paraphernalia devices by qualified patients.Campaign proponents, the Detroit Coalition for Compassionate Care, gathered nearly 10,000 signatures in 2003 to place the proposal before the Detroit City Council. The Council failed to approve the initiative, instead opting to place it on the August 3, 2004 municipal ballot.Ann Arbor voters will decide on a similar medical marijuana initiative in November.Full text of the Detroit Medical Marijuana Act is available online at: http://www.mmdetroit.org/For a complete summary of pending state and local initiatives, please visit: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6172DL: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=6186Detroit Voters Can OK Pot for Pain http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread19223.shtmlMedical Marijuana Initiative To Appear on Ballot http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread19202.shtmlMedical Pot on Detroit, Ann Arbor Ballots http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread19181.shtmlMedicinal Pot Headed To '04 Detroit Ballot http://cannabisnews.com/news/thread17843.shtml Join NORML And "The Marijuana-Logues" In New York City For One-Night BenefitJuly 29, 2004 - New York, NY, USANew York, NY: NORML is proud to partner with High Times Magazine and the cast of the critically acclaimed off-Broadway stage performance the Marijuana-Logues for a one of a kind benefit fundraiser in New York City on Tuesday, August 17.All proceeds from the August 17 performance of The Marijuana-Logues will go directly to fund NORML's marijuana law reform efforts. Could you give any more details of your airport arrest?Don't feel obliged if you'd rather not talk about it, but are there any lessons the rest of us might learn from your unfortunate situation? The Reverend Bud Green

i don't care if we fill the jails...
I served federal probation for three years for a pot charge; I got busted at the airport. Probation sucks; you have to swim the tide of these toughness-obsessed dickheads who preach to you and even make it difficult for you to work. Plus you give them urine three times a week, drinking gallons of water just to get your cock straight, and they observe you--very humiliating, I hated it.It didn't, however teach me the evil of my ways. In fact, it made me determined to disobey them once I was free. They dehumanize you, make you feel you are a characterless moron who understands nothing about life and therefore need Uncle to hold your hand for awhile. How stupid. And then they act like they did you a freaking favor for doing it all, putting up with you in particular. On top of it all, it's going to stay that way. Basically because uneducated goons get nice cushy jobs where they have to do practically nothing, just scrutinize your behavior and ask you useless questions once a month. Payoff: 60 grand. Hell, I'm in the wrong racket! End The War. Legalize. Simple.--rchandar
