OCEAN A Croatan High School student faces a seldom-used charge after bringing marijuana-laced brownies to an end-of-school party that sickened a teacher, according to the Carteret County Sheriff's Department.
The Croatan High School student, 17, turned himself in Tuesday at the Carteret County Sheriff's Office and was charged with the felonious distribution of certain foods at Halloween and other times, School Resource Officer Clark Patton said. Bond was set at $4,900. "It (law) goes back to when people were putting razor blades in apples at Halloween," Patton said. It is currently used anytime someone knowingly puts something in food or drink that could make someone sick. Patton said math teacher Michelle Meyer told her class they could bring in a video or do something different on June 3. The students decided to bring in food, and although Meyer was not aware of their decision, she allowed them to have a food party. Fredenburg allegedly brought in a pan of brownies. "The boy cut the brownies and gave (Meyer) the first one," Patton said. He said that around 4 p.m., Meyer began to feel sick, went to Principal Matt Bottoms and was taken to Carteret General Hospital. Meyer tested positive for THC, the chemical found in marijuana. The remainder of Meyer's brownie also was tested and also tested positive for the chemical.

let's get serious, people...
If you're trying to tell me that this kid is guilty of the same crime as putting razor blades in apples then, yet again, our justice system needs an overhaul. Although I've got to tell you, if stupidity is a crime then the kid's guilty as hell. He probably didn't even extract the THC appropriately. Regardless, come on folks, don't we have better things to do with public money? Let's stop wasting time on recreational drug users and focus on some more basic criminal issues like homicide, rape, larceny, and even your good old-fashioned speeding violation.
