Thousands came, and more than 260 got stopped during the weekend as Minnesota state troopers and Stillwater police kept an eye out for drunken drivers and other lawbreakers leaving the two-day Edgefest music festival in Somerset, Wis.
More than 200 people were ticketed and about a dozen jailed Friday and Saturday when troopers and police officers stopped 260 vehicles crossing into Minnesota from Wisconsin, said Lt. Bob Maskel of the Minnesota State Patrol.Maskel did not have tallies for Sunday, because nine state troopers and five Stillwater officers still were making stops into the evening.Because checkpoints where vehicles are stopped at random are illegal in Minnesota, Maskel said, troopers and police watched for obvious violations, such as missing front license plates, erratic driving and people waving beer cans. ``As they come across the bridge, when we see a violation, we pull them. A lot of times, you can see them (with beer cans),'' he said.The Friday and Saturday stops, mostly at the Stillwater bridge, yielded four driving-while-impaired charges and four drug arrests. Authorities seized a vehicle in one of the drug arrests after finding methamphetamine inside, Maskel said.Drug dogs checked 58 vehicles and found illegal drugs in 24, he said. Authorities ticketed 25 people for open-container violations, 34 for possession of marijuana, 23 for underage drinking, six for driving with revoked licenses, and two for possession of drug paraphernalia. Another 93 tickets were issued for miscellaneous offenses including equipment violations and outstanding warrants.Thousands of people attended the two-day heavy metal music festival at Wisconsin's Float-Rite Amphitheater in Somerset.
