Sources said Hutchinson is considering shifting from his job as head of the Drug Enforcement Administration to a new post. A congressional official said the idea is being floated at the drug agency. Published reports this week said Hutchinson may take a high-ranking deputy slot dealing with border control. President Bush is expected to begin filling top slots in the next few weeks. The popular Arkansan declined on Thursday to indicate whether he had been contacted by the White House or whether he is considering the post.“I’m happy doing what I’m doing at the DEA. But I serve at the pleasure of the president and would certainly yield to any call that he gave me,” Hutchinson said, echoing remarks he made in the summer of 2001, shortly before he announced he would be leaving the U.S. House of Representatives to head the DEA.Hutchinson said he has been working on the Bush transition team that’s been shaping the new department. “I’ve worked at a substantive level in terms of the development of the new homeland security department and the anticipated transition for that,” he said. “This is one of the most important reorganizations for our country in terms of security and protecting our borders from drugs.”Hutchinson said it is too soon to discuss staffing of the new agency because the legislation just passed this week. “We just have to wait and see what the president decides,” he added.The Senate on Tuesday passed the measure that creates the department, designed to protect the nation against terrorism. Homeland Security Director Tom Ridge is slated to run the new department, which will consolidate 22 federal agencies under one umbrella.Bush is expected to sign the bill into law when he returns from a NATO conference in Europe. White House spokesman Taylor Gross would not comment on specific personnel issues involving the Department of Homeland Security. “Now that the bill has passed, the administration will work very quickly to fill all of the new positions,” Gross said. Other opportunities also may be on the horizon for Hutchinson.Marty Ryall, chairman of the Arkansas Republican Party, said Hutchinson is among the party’s top three choices to challenge first-term Sen. Blanche Lincoln, D-Ark., in the 2004 election.While Gov. Mike Huckabee is a top contender, Hutchinson and Lt. Gov. Winthrop Rockefeller also would make formidable opponents, Ryall said.Hutchinson is an excellent choice for a homeland security post, said William “Bud” Harper, director of the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management and the state’s homeland security contact. “I am pleased that we have a person of his character, background and ability to represent the country in this most crucial and important position he might fill,” Harper said.
