A parent wanted to know whether she should look through her child's backpack for drugs. A teenager asked how children can help parents who abuse drugs. People were able to get answers to these questions and others at the "United We Stand Against Drugs" town hall meeting at City Hall on Tuesday night. The purpose of the meeting was to bring together law enforcement officials and drug treatment and prevention officials to discuss how to curb drug use in the community.
Among the participants were U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Director Asa Hutchinson, U.S. Attorney Greg Miller, Florida's Drug Czar Jim McDonough and members of the Tallahassee Police Department, the Leon County Sheriff's Office, Disc Village and Turn About."Drugs don't discriminate," said Keely Wafers-Kaklamanos, director of outpatient services for Turn About, a local drug treatment program. "They are a real problem, and if you intervene early, problems can be overcome."A couple of parents said they were looking for ways to keep drugs away from their children."I want to be more in tune to what my child is doing and to try not to be so gullible," said Valerie Rhaburn, who has a 14-year-old son.She said her son has tried smoking cigarettes but hasn't used drugs, and she wants to prevent him from doing so.Lisa Dixon said she has taken privileges away from her 14-year-old daughter who has tried drugs. After attending the meeting, she said she'd have a discussion with her daughter about the consequences."I'll tell her about the teens that died from using this," Dixon said. "Nobody thinks it can happen to them."She said she wants her daughter to tell her about people using or dealing drugs so that the problem can stop in her community."She's so afraid of telling who's doing it," Dixon said. "She's not going to tattle."But some people said they don't think the war on drugs has accomplished anything."I advocate total decriminalization of drugs and starting strict government regulation," said Tom Heddleston, a graduate student at Florida State University.Sending large numbers of people to jail isn't stopping drug abuse, he said.Overall, more education is needed to help people understand how drugs affect people's lives, said Miller, the U.S. attorney for North Florida."Education is so important....No one educates about long-term consequences," he said.Note: Authorities answer community's questions.Source: Tallahassee Democrat (FL)Author: Kim McCoy, Democrat Staff WriterPublished: Wednesday, October 23, 2002Copyright: 2002 Tallahassee DemocratContact: tdedit taldem.comWebsite: http://www.tallahassee.com/mld/tallahassee/CannabisNews DEA Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/DEA.shtml

Brainwashed to the max
This is one of the most ignorant statements I have ever heard:"She said her son has tried smoking cigarettes but hasn't used drugs"As if one of the most addictive substances known to man wasn't a drug!! Oh I forgot, we can't call it a drug cause it has the blessing of TWO-FACED WEASELY BUREAUCRATS whose pockets are lined with tobacco lobby money!"Education is so important....No one educates about long-term consequences," he said. What about the long term, worldwide consequences of 65 years of prohibition?

ignorant parents
Lisa Dixon said she has taken privileges away from her 14-year-old daughter who has tried drugs. After attending the meeting, she said she'd have a discussion with her daughter about the consequences."I'll tell her about the teens that died from using this," Dixon said. "Nobody thinks it can happen to them." what does she mean by this? i assume weed. what she NEEDS to do is tell her the truth: that she doesnt want her to use it because of the health/criminal risks, BUT that she will love her whether she does or does not. when i have kids thats what i will say. punishment isnt going to do much i dont think.
