Sheriffs and police chiefs from across Nevada are joining forces to fight a November ballot question that would legalize up to 3 ounces of marijuana for adults.“As a leader of law enforcement, I don’t want to be responsible for the increase of criminal activity that, make no mistake about it, will follow the passing of this measure,” Sparks Police Chief John Dotson said during a Wednesday news conference.
Dotson is president of the Nevada Sheriffs and Chiefs Association, which voted last week to oppose Proposition 9. Reno Police Assistant Chief Jim Weston, Washoe County Sheriff Dennis Balaam and Washoe County District Attorney Richard Gammick joined Dotson at the news conference.Law enforcement agencies throughout the state planned similar news conferences Wednesday.Dotson said 84 percent of convicted drug users referred to Washoe County drug court started with marijuana. In a survey of arrests in southern Nevada, 41 percent of those arrested for domestic violence and 31 percent of those arrested for violent crimes tested positive for marijuana.Snipped: Complete Article: http://www.rgj.com/news/stories/html/2002/10/02/25171.phpNewshawk: MicheleSource: Reno Gazette-Journal (NV)Published: October 2, 2002Copyright: 2002 Reno Gazette-Journal Website: http://www.rgj.com/Contact: rgjmail nevadanet.comRelated Articles & Web Sites:NRLEhttp://www.nrle.org/Marijuana Policy Projecthttp://www.mpp.org/Question 9 Enjoys Potpourri of Supporthttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread14311.shtmlMarijuana is Bad, Mmm'kay? Do they count revoked parole and probation...
Re-legalizing cannabis means also ending the policy of revoking parole or probation upon failing a pee pee test for THC.People being revoked parole or probation upon failing a pee pee test for THC, may not be added up when they count how many people they cage for using cannabis.

Off Topic - Bring Back The Draft?
Hi everyone,I was looking for news and found this article. I wasn't sure if it is a spoof or is this real. If it's real would young people be ok with it?Make Draft Not War Phil HuangOregon Daily EmeraldOctober 03, 2002 With a possible war against Iraq looming, it may not be long before the United States begins amassing thousands of troops at the Saudi border again. What a melancholy contrast then, to see so many privileged students wandering about last week, joining a riot while shouting "U-S-A!" We must instill discipline in these kids and channel their excess energy. We should reinstate the military draft. Ever notice that...
...the people who are speaking out against Question 9 are those with the most to lose if it passes? Their jobs, careers, and mental stability are at risk.Take the case of John Walters... he's spent his life fighting against marijuana, and he has reached what is probably the height of his career. His mindset (not to mention his job) depends on his belief that marijuana is harmful and evil. If he were to stop believing this for even one second, his entire world would be shattered. It would lead to depression and possibly a mental breakdown. In order to avoid this, he must ignore or fight against anything that threatens his belief system. This includes hard scientific evidence that has grown significantly in the past ten years. This includes the exhaustive, recent studies of marijuana done by the governments of Canada and Britain. This especially includes the terminally ill people who are using medical marijuana in their last days - they put a human face on the damage his beliefs do.To some extent, this is also true for DEA agents, prosecutors, and police officers, who spend a large percentage of their time dealing with marijuana cases. Many of them could lose their jobs if Question 9 and measures like it became reality, and in the job market, how useful are their skills? What would they do? It's a down economy.

Police Cheifs Oppose What They're Told To Oppose!
Johnny's in the basement
Mixing up the medicine
I'm on the pavement
Thinking about the government
The man in the trench coat
Badge out, laid off
Says he's got a bad cough
Wants to get it paid offLook out kid
It's somethin' you did
God knows when
But you're doin' it again
You better duck down the alley way
Lookin' for a new friend
The man in the coon-skin cap
In the big pen
Wants eleven dollar bills
You only got ten

Maggie comes fleet foot
 Face full of black soot
Talkin' that the heat put
Plants in the bed but
The phone's tapped anyway
Maggie says that many say
They must bust in early May
Orders from the D.E. A.Look out kid
Don't matter what you did
Walk on your tip toes
Don't try "No Doz"
Better stay away from those
That carry around a fire hose
Keep a clean nose
Watch the plain clothes
You don't need a weather man
To know which way the wind blows

Get sick, get well
Hang around a ink well
Ring bell, hard to tell
If anything is goin' to sell
Try hard, get barred
Get back, write braille
Get jailed, jump bail
Join the army, if you failLook out kid
You're gonna get hit
But users, cheaters
Six-time losers
Hang around the theaters
Girl by the whirlpool
Lookin' for a new fool
Don't follow leaders
Watch the parkin' metersAh get born, keep warm
Short pants, romance, learn to dance
Get dressed, get blessed
Try to be a success
Please her, please him, buy gifts
Don't steal, don't lift
Twenty years of schoolin'
And they put you on the day shiftLook out kid
They keep it all hid
Better jump down a manhole
Light yourself a candle
Don't wear sandals
Try to avoid the scandals
Don't wanna be a bum
You better chew gum

Less criminals...more activity...what's up here?
--“As a leader of law enforcement, I don’t want to be responsible for the increase of criminal activity that, make no mistake about it, will follow the passing of this measure,” Sparks Police Chief John Dotson said during a Wednesday news conference.--Don't you worry Chief, you won't be held responsible which ever way the criminal activity goes, up, down or sideways. But my guess is after the measure passes there will be this large group of people (responsible, honest, caring Americans) that YOU now consider criminals will no longer be! Since it will not be a criminal act to have 3 ounces what will make the criminal activity increase? In one day thousands of people that were criminals are no more! You can't scare me with your paranoid rant. Oh! Happy days are on the horizon!

Right On MikeEEEEE
Nothing will piss me off faster than having someone tell me they got busted for pot, but the cops were nice or the judge was lenient and could have, bla bla bla!Bushit! Was Hitler nice to the Jews he didn't gas by making them slave laborors? Was Nixon nice to leave troops under fire until 1975 when his 1968 platform was to end the war? Is the measles better than chicken pox? Hell no!Fascist are fascist, doughnut eaters or judges don't work for the communities, they work for profits! Busting the sick and dying until the people say no. Santa Cruz didn't have any help from the Sheriff collecting signatures for Prop 215 in 96 or Measure B back in 92. They propagandized against it for the so called safety of the kids. Who in their eyes were much better off in juvi hall getting raped as a deterrent! We don need no stinking badges!Captain Kangaroo

Rulers and Laws
“As a leader of law enforcement, I don’t want to be responsible for the increase of criminal activity that, make no mistake about it, will follow the passing of this measure,” Sparks Police Chief John Dotson said during a Wednesday news conference. Apparently Chief Dotson does not understand the meaning of the word, legalize. Legalization will result in less crime, not more. "The more prohibitions there are, the poorer the people become." from The Book of Tao, "The Art of Government" by Laotse."Of the best rulers The people only know that they exist; The next best they love and praise; The next they fear; And the next they revile. When they do not command the people's faith,Some will lose faith in them,And then they resort to oaths! But (of the best) when their task is accomplished, their work is done, The people all remark, 'We have done it ourselves.'"from The Book of Tao, "Rulers" by Laotse.

Who will you listen to?
Are you grateful to the cop that gave you the traffic ticket? You explained but the cop still gave you the ticket and your insurance rates went up. The cop says you broke the law and had to do it, that it's his job. Will you listen to the cop that will lock you up or to compassionate people? That choice will be presented to the people of Nevada. Notice how they end with the standard propaganda BS. Dotson said 84 percent of convicted drug users referred to Washoe County drug court started with marijuana.

I wonder if these same people used alcohol too.

I can not blame this on the doughnut.
When Man walks in a manner that obeys Our Father, as a Christian, He may have access to the Holy Spirit of Truth. When We as a society separate man from the Truth by oath, the way We do to police, by requesting they prioritize Mans laws over Gods, this is what We get. People that are unable to consistantly recognize Truth.

Is that a pic of a doughnut FoM? ¶8)
"The end of the institution, maintenance and administration of government is to secure the existence of the body politic: to protect it, and to furnish the individuals who compose it with the power of enjoying, in safety and tranquillity, their natural rights and the blessings of life; and whenever these great objects are not ordained, the people have a right to alter the government and to take measures necessary for their safety, happiness and prosperity." -- President John AdamsCannabis Hemp: The Invisible Prohibition Revealed

Either the Reno Gazette Staff has poor grammar...
. . . or they meant to misplace the modifier in this sentence:"He also said the measure would help the sick and dying get pot they now can obtain legally at a reasonable price."No, they can't obtain it legally at a reasonable price, dufuses. The correct wording would be as follows:He also said the measure would help the sick and dying get cannabis, which now can be obtained legally, at a reasonable price.Better yet:He also said the measure would help the sick and dying get cannabis at a reasonable price. It can now be obtained legally, provided that the recipient is willing to wade through the paperwork and wait for a response. During this wait, the patient must go to the black market where cannabis is sold at exhorbitant prices, making it both dangerous and difficult to afford.Dan B

Changing the laws
Cops also say, "If you don't like the law then change it". When people try to change the law, cops oppose that too.

the rest (looks like this was just a blurb)
“Drugs, by definition, alter behavior and these statistics speak for themselves,” Dotson said.Meanwhile, the Washoe County Libertarian Party has endorsed Proposition 9.The ballot question, said Libertarian Brendan Trainor, sends an important message to state government and its law enforcement officers: Do not arrest or intimidate responsible adult marijuana users.Trainor is former chairman of the county party and a party candidate for Congress in District 2. He also said the measure would help the sick and dying get pot they now can obtain legally at a reasonable price.

Dotson the Anslinger Wanna-be
>Dotson said 84 percent of convicted drug users referred to Washoe County drug court started with marijuana. Why? Because the same lovely people you must go to now for MJ have all the other drugs as well. Legalizing removes the only link between pot and hard drugs. I bet close to 100% started with alcohol, but of course they will never say that.>41 percent of those arrested for domestic violence and 31 percent of those arrested for violent crimes tested positive for marijuana.Completely irrelevant, reefer madness bullcrappey!! As these phallus-noses should know, MJ tests have no relevance whatsoever to impairment at the time of the crime. Besides, even with their statistics meant anything, the majority of violent criminals did not use MJ, negating their inference that pot use = violence. Why won't they tell us how many violent criminals tested positive for alcohol?Law enforcement are hyper about this, because they will lose revenue from fines and forfeiture laws and possibly lose their jobs as well due to a greatly decreased work load. Maybe a thinning of the ranks is in order. Let's start at the top. (Cosmo Spacely: "Dotson, youuuuu're fired!!") Nevada citizens need to see through the smokescreen and say, "Enough terrorizing of peaceful pot users already!"

Since I was a wee pup...
...all I've ever heard from cops on the subject of marijuana was "We don't make the laws, we just enforce them". I guess now they'd like to make them too.
