As all of us close followers of the fashion scene know, First Lady Terry Ventura wasn't just making a fashion statement with a dress she wore to a fund-raising dinner last week. She also was making a political statement.Ventura's dress was made of 60 percent hemp and 40 percent silk. She wore the dress at a time when it appears that the Legislature might pass a bill that would allow Minnesota farmers to grow industrial hemp on a closely monitored and experimental basis.
Depending on whom you listen to, legalizing the production of hemp could be the financial salvation of Minnesota farmers or another major loss in the war on drugs.Long before he was elected governor, Jesse Ventura made it clear he was in favor of allowing farmers to grow hemp, which proponents say has hundreds of commercial uses. Terry Ventura underscored the support by wearing the hemp dress, which was given to her by two women she doesn't know.Deborah Nelson and her sister Brenda Spurlock made the dress and slipped it -- along with a matching hemp bandana for the governor -- to an unknown member of the governor's staff a few weeks ago.Click the above link to read the whole story!
