HONOLULU A measure that could lead to the cultivation of an experimental crop of hemp on the Big Island was approved by a legislative conference committee Tuesday despite continued opposition by law enforcement.
The potential to nurture a new industry to aid the state's ailing economy outweighed concerns by police and prosecutors that growing hemp would lead to an increase in the growth and use of marijuana. Marijuana is a sister plant to hemp, but hemp doesn't contain as much of the chemical THC, the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana. Hemp can be used in hundreds of ways, including food, fuel, clothing, paper and products for use in building roads and homes. Although the bill makes it clear that only those with government-issued permits would be allowed to grow hemp, law enforcement officials believe it still could lead to bigger problems with illegal drugs in the future.
