More civilian Army workers in Huntsville including those with access to top-secret information are facing random drug tests. The Expanded Civilian Drug Testing Program begins Jan. 15 for civilian Army workers at Redstone Arsenal and the U.S. Army's Space & Missile Defense Command in nearby Cummings Research Park, said Pam Rogers, an Army spokeswoman at Redstone Arsenal.
The Army already has random drug tests for soldiers and some civilian workers, Ms. Rogers said Wednesday. Civilian Army workers in Huntsville already being tested include 120 who are pilots, civilian guards and police, along with those who work in the Army's substance-abuse program, she said. Under the expanded program, 1,122 of the 10,000 civilian Army workers in Huntsville will face random drug tests because of the jobs they hold. Among those who will face random drug tests are employees with access to top secret information as a part of their work, Ms. Rogers said. It's the first time a civilian in that type of position has faced a random drug test program, she said. Workers with security clearances undergo extensive background checks before they are granted clearances, so the random drug tests are just an extra layer of security, Ms. Rogers said. Some of the other workers being added to the list for random drug tests are firefighters, ammunition or explosives handlers, workers required to possess a commercial drivers license or who drive a vehicle transporting hazardous materials, and other aviation workers including air traffic controllers and aircraft maintenance and safety workers. Ms. Rogers said about half the workers normally will be tested during a 12-month period. A computer will randomly select which positions to randomly test, Ms. Rogers said. Workers will get a call the day they are to go in for a urine test, Ms. Rogers said. They will be screened for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, opiates, barbiturates and some prescription drugs, she said. An unexplained positive test for drugs will result in a worker being put into another job. That worker also will have to undergo a drug rehabilitation program that includes six follow-up drug tests. Refusing to take a drug test or having a second unexplained positive test will result in the person being fired, Ms. Rogers said. The new testing program is being implemented at Army installations across the nation, Ms. Rogers said. dumbs**ts
As most sensible people know, one of the best ways to get secret information from someone is to get him/her drunk!!(Of course, drunk = no problem. Having smoked up a couple of weeks ago = BIG problem.)Why aren't they pee testing the generals who were in charge when those friendly fire incidents in Afghanistan happened? Or the bombing of towns which were supposed to be on our side? It can't be the fault of the soldiers, since they were "DRUG"-FREE after being piss tested!!

Silly Me
Until I started opening my eyes I believed that politicians got behind laws that they believed conformed with the will of the voters. So if a politician believes it is the will of the voters to have government workers tested for drugs, the point about them being elected officials, and the drug test disqualifing them holds no water. The public would not want them in office if they were users.Of course this is not the case. It is all about money. Vocal minorities and corporations are what drive the politicians with their lobbying cash.

toonces....
..I read about that politician pee court decision fiasco somewhere too....I think BobDobbs idea is worth pursuing.....It's such a simple,,"no- brainer" concept,,,,,,,why,,and for what reason would ANYONE object to a drug test????....Especially,,officials of the US government,,,in fact, they should be the FIRST ones to undergo mandatory supervised drug testing!!!.....heck,,if I had my way,,,right after the slimy politician turned over his urine sample,(of his grandaughters pee,,,crystal clear),,,then we give the bastard a Mandatory Lie Detector Test.........No taxation without representation!..........ddd................d

Re: toonces
I believe the case was in Louisiana. It'd be wild if one's coworkers could override the "veto" of a boss firing someone for failing a drug test, thus making them "duely (sp?) elected by the people." I'd laugh my way to the bank and a great working record complete with customer satisfaction, improved profits, and low absenteeism.

IGNORE POST BELOW.....CORRECTED VERSION HERE..
JUST TOO DAMN EARLY TO WRITE PROSE WITHOUT ERRORS! ___________________________________________I recall reading a Supreme Court case from a southern state where a law requiring legislators to pee in a cup was challenged (so we know at least ONE of those lemmings had a brain). The Court said such requirements cannot be made to apply to elected officials as flunking the test would disqualify an otherwise legally elected officeholder. I distinctly recall a sentence in the decision to the effect that this "pee parity" law was an EFFRONT to the electorate! I just wish I could recall the state in question; I will try to find the decision. I think I found out it about either in Maps or Lindesmith Center site.
They got balls!

Re: krutch
If we are going to test the peonage at random, then all of the military brass should have to be tested randomly. Also congress and the president should be tested randomly. Surely, they also have secret information that they might cough up to the enemy in a reefer induced frenzy. And if they haven't got anything to hide...? Tho i believe politicos who have been faced with this before have shot it down as "invasive" and "unnecessary". Apparently what's good for the goose ain't for the gander. Big freakin' surprise. How long til we have classified "serfs" in this country?

Wasted Time
Lets face it. Drug tests catch people who smoke pot while giving everyone who uses more dangerous and addictive drugs a window to clean up. There is no evidence that smoking pot causes anyone to give intellegence to the enemy. The security angle is just an excuse the misguided power mongers use so they can have more control of the personal lives of thier employees. Bob Dobbs also makes an excellent point. If we are going to test the peonage at random, then all of the military brass should have to be tested randomly. Also congress and the president should be tested randomly. Surely, they also have secret information that they might cough up to the enemy in a reefer induced frenzy.

The Wall of Jericho vs. the Space Shuttle
Under the expanded program, 1,122 of the 10,000 civilian Army workers in Huntsville will face random drug tests because of the jobs they hold. Face? I turned my back on all of it and walked away. The drug tests never made it to me: I had advised when drug tests were instituted that handing me a cup would be the surest way to lose my services and it never happened, not even at random. But I grew disgusted with the general incompetence and politicization of science and left. I took my world reputation and scientific mastery with me, leaving the several projects to those less competent except in the disciplines of pissing in cups, exceeding the budget and defying the laws of physics. All of us are happier now, including our enemies. Many others, and I know a few, are concluding that my course is the honorable one and the one necessary to preserve the integrity of science. The war on drugs bleeds institutions and companies of many of their best people. Do you ever wonder why smart bombs often hit the Red Cross or why the device that was projected to be built in two years for ten million dollars still does not work after five years and fifty million dollars? I don't.

Make Lynne Cheney pee in a cup
Let's appoint her to something and demand to see her urine!Make her undergo the kind of sexually abusive urine testing that welfare recipients have been asked to endure, in a doorless institutional stall being minutely watched by a complete stranger.

The Grand Old Duke of York,
He had 10,000 men...
He made them all take urine tests
and he made them all take them again.Workers with security clearances undergo extensive background checks before they are granted clearances, so the random drug tests are just an extra layer of security, Ms. Rogers said. They can call it Operation Urine Safe Hands. You never know when Osama Bin Pothead might be lurking around the corner. After all, militant Islamic Al Qaida terrorists from the Puritanical extremists Wahhabi sect in Saudi Arabia are so well known across the world for their devotion to cannabis culture. In the last Bin Laden tape, translators were able to hear Bin Laden ask one of his guests, "Like hey dude, how in the all-powerful Allah did you manage to grow that righteous bud of which we just so bountifully partook?"CIA analysts are now working on a theory that Bin Laden may have escaped Afghanistan disguised as Jeff Spicoli.

Trickle-down theory
If we're going to have a clean-pee army, we need to have a commander in chief who is not under the influence of any illicit drugs. (Some coffee to chase down that pep pill, Mr. Bush?) Then let's force all the five-star generals and admirals to pee in a cup. Congress too. I'm sure these boys would be all for such things, since they don't seem to mind forcing other people to do it...

Wasted Time and Money
Another feelgood policy from the Feds. This will not improve the quality of employee, nor increase national security. It will create more people in the positions with alcohol problems, or who use drugs that do not hang around so long as cannabis. This idiocy will end when people refuse to comply, or demand that such counterproductive policies end.
