cannabisnews.com: Tourists Bring own Cannabis on Vacation! Tourists Bring own Cannabis on Vacation! Posted by FoM on December 26, 1998 at 15:11:48 PT MANUKAU -- Tourists might bring in the dollars but they also bring the dope. It seems New Zealand's clean, green image is a magnet for European tourists who want to bring their own version of green to the country. Seven European tourists, holidaying in New Zealand to escape their winter have been convicted of drug possession at the Otahuhu District Court in the last 10 days. The tourists included two Frenchmen, a pair from Wales, two Germans, and a Briton. The travellers had brought the drugs -- cannabis resin (hash), leaf, or seeds -- from their home countries into New Zealand. It seems the tourists are not only bringing drugs with them, but also an unhelpful attitude. Markus Schjka, one of the convicted German men, said in his defence that possession of 19g of cannabis leaf would not be a crime in his country. NZ Customs drug dogs caught all the tourists before they left the airport. The Department of Corrections stationed several new drug dogs at Auckland airport this year because of increasing drug trafficking into New Zealand. Tourist numbers are going up from three out of four of the countries whose citizens have been convicted at the Otahuhu court for drugs. Statistics New Zealand figures show that more French, Welsh, and English tourists arrived in September 1998. Fewer Germans arrived. -- NZPA Home Comment Email Register Recent Comments Help Post Comment Name: Optional Password: E-Mail: Subject: Comment: [Please refrain from using profanity in your message] Link URL: Link Title:
