Latest Buzz About Hemp Beer! |
Posted by FoM on August 13, 1999 at 07:00:21 PT New rules make it easier for microbreweries Source: The Toronto Sun A new brew that puts a fresh twist on the term "beer buzz" is about to hit store shelves. Hogtown Hemp Beer, produced using a mash made from marijuana seeds, will debut in Toronto-area beer stores Sept. 15. "The seeds we get are Agriculture Canada approved," notes Peter Lazaro of Hogtown Brewing Co. in Clarkson, but was coy when asked if beer nuts could catch a better buzz off hemp beer. Beer buffs are already all abuzz about their chance to quaff other exotic offerings, thanks to recent rules making it easier for microbreweries to score shelf space at Beer Stores. Until May 17, breweries had to splash out an upfront listing fee of $24,900 per beer per package size to gain access to the Brewers Retail Inc.'s chain of Beer Stores. A brewer wanting to sell two different beers in two different sizes (i.e. six-pack and 12-pack) would have to shell out nearly $100,000. However, the rules were changed this spring to allow brewers to get a beer on store shelves for a listing fee of $2,500 plus $200 per store to a maximum of $24,930. "It really is good for the little guys," says Lazaro. "We think we'll easily double our sales." The five-year-old brewery -- which produces Hogtown Gold Lager, Hogtown Red and Hogtown Hemp Beer -- has relied on bar sales and on-premise sales to stay afloat. "The move is fantastic," says Andrew Cousins, president of three-year-old Kawartha Lakes Brewing Co., whose Raspberry Wheat and Cream Ale should be hitting Beer Stores in late September. "For new or small brewers, the old listing fee was a huge barrier," notes John Wiggins, president of Creemore Springs and chairman of the Small Brewers Association. Beer buffs will also get to try new brands and brewers can experiment with off-beat brands without breaking the bank. "Consumers are going to get a variety of beer they would have never otherwise gotten," says Lazaro. Friday, August 13, 1999 Home Comment Email Register Recent Comments Help |
