Five American lawmakers have arrived in Colombia to tour the front lines of a U.S.-backed drug war and lend support to human-rights workers. A four-member delegation of representatives headed by Jim Kolbe, a Republican from Arizona, arrived Friday on a three-day visit that includes a meeting with Colombian President Andres Pastrana and a tour of a military base where U.S. soldiers are training Colombian counternarcotics troops, a spokeswoman from the U.S. Embassy said Saturday.
Traveling with Kolbe were Dan Miller, a Florida Republican, John Olver, a Massachusetts Democrat and Sam Farr, a California Democrat. The troop training is financed through a $1.3 billion U.S. aid package to curb the nation' s narcotics industry. The package also includes dozens of combat helicopters. Also on Friday, Sen. Paul Wellstone, a Minnesota Democrat, arrived on a separate two-day visit that includes meetings with security-force members and a prominent peace activist. Wellstone -- a steadfast opponent of the Plan Colombia aid package -- visited Colombia last December in a show of support for human-rights activists. More than a dozen U.S. lawmakers have visited Colombia this year as Washington considers expanding the aid plan.
