LONDON, Britain's three-day event team could lose their guaranteed place at next year's Sydney Olympics after their best horse failed a dope test, newspapers reported on Saturday.
Coral Cove failed a drugs test after his performance led the British team to the bronze medal at last October's World Equestrian Games in Rome. The British Horse Trials Association (BHTA) issued a statement saying a urine sample from the horse, ridden by Polly Phillipps, contained "a level higher than the permitted threshold of a naturally occurring substance found in hay, willow herb, horse feed and many plants." The Guardian newspaper said Phillipps would appear before the International Equestrian Federation (FEI) next month. If she was found to be in breach of FEI regulations, the British team could lose their bronze medal from Rome and the place in the Olympic competition which came with it. However, they could still qualify for Sydney with a good showing at this year's European championships in Germany, in September. Copyright 1999 Reuters Limited. All rights reserved.
