After one year, Whitney cleared of pot possession in Hawaii More than a year after security guards at Hawaii's Keahole-Kona International Airport searched Whitney Houston's handbag and found marijuana in two plastic baggies and three partially smoked joints, the marijuana possession charges against her have been dismissed.
Houston was required to meet several court-ordered requirements after pleading no contest last November to the charges. According to Deputy Prosecutor Mel Fujino, the singer was required to pay $4,025 in contributions, court fees and donations to money to an anti-drug group, as well as undergo a substance abuse assessment test by a court determined deadline before the Kona District Court would consider dismissal.According to Fujino, the singer had failed to submit proof of her assessment before the court's deadline -- causing the prosecutor to throw out the deferred "no contest" plea and have her re-sentenced. But the court reconsidered after the evaluation arrived last month after the agreed upon date. Houston's lawyer, Bryan Blaney, took the blame for the delay, claiming that Houston took a drug test but thought that was all the court required. But court officials actually demanded a "substance-abuse assessment," which involved sitting down for a full evaluation with a substance-abuse counselor. On Monday, District Judge Joseph Florendo dismissed the charges after reviewing the assessment.Source: Rolling Stone (US)Author: Jaan UhelszkiPublished: March 9, 2001 Copyright: 2001 Straight Arrow Publishers Company, L.P.Address: 1290 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10104-0298Fax: (212) 767-8214Contact: letters rollingstone.comWebsite: http://www.rollingstone.com/Related Articles:Houston Lawyer Says Marijuana Case Resolvedhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/7/thread7542.shtmlThe Whitney Houston Rules http://cannabisnews.com/news/5/thread5578.shtmlAirport Guard Find MJ in Bag of Whitney Houstonhttp://cannabisnews.com/news/4/thread4351.shtml
