COVINGTON, Ky. Covington police announced a new offensive to try to stamp out drugs and gangs in the northern Kentucky city.State and federal police agencies will join the local initiative, which will include undercover drug buys, roadblocks and increased patrols. Police also will use drug sweeps, in which authorities collect indictments over a period of time and serve them all at once.
New measures to be used include pairing police and parole officers to investigate crimes and sharing arrest information with other police agencies.``We're going to keep at this until we can improve the quality of life for the citizens who live in the affected areas,'' said Assistant Covington Police Chief Bill Dorsey. ``Good housing stock and clean streets go a long way to make safe neighborhoods.''One new measure will put Kenton County Jail inmates to work sprucing up streets and sidewalks. Police hope the sight of prisoners in bright-orange uniforms will give pause to people dealing or buying drugs. Only prisoners convicted of the least serious felony charges will join the crews. The initiative also will concentrate on violence and gangs, two problems that have mushroomed since crack cocaine hit Covington streets in the early 1990s, Dorsey said.http://www.ohio.com/
