Move over Prairie wheat, there's a new crop in town and it'll make you feel so gooood. Forget about great B.C. marijuana -- the best stuff is soon to be legally grown, rolled and sold on the Prairies. Health Canada is paying Prairie Plant Systems of Saskatoon $5.7 million to harvest premium-quality pot for the next five years at its operations in Flin Flon, Man.
"Canada is acting compassionately by allowing the use of marijuana by people who are suffering from grave and debilitating illnesses," Health Minister Allan Rock said yesterday. Perfect Berry: The Saskatchewan company hired by the feds has previously cloned the perfect Saskatoon berry, which it farmed at an accelerated pace in a greenhouse 360 metres underground in an old mine shaft. Now Prairie Plant will grow first-class pot under tight security at a Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting shaft in Flin Flon. The company will have one year to produce its first crop. After that they'll store it and distribute it. Activists have long lobbied the federal government to allow medicinal marijuana for AIDS patients and others suffering from a lack of appetite. However, those Canadians who wish to get their hands on a fat, research-grade spliff must first obtain a Health Canada exemption from current drug laws and must participate in a research program. As of Dec. 1, more than 140 sick Canadians had been given permission by the feds to inhale. Dr. Jody Gomber, director-general of Health Canada's drug strategy, said yesterday it's still not known how the medicinal marijuana will be distributed or whether it will be free. "We have basically almost one year to figure out how that's going to work," Gomber said. Inquiring Minds Want to Know
What seeds are they going to use? How will quality control be measured? Will they use different strains for different conditions as medical cannabis patients require? I only hope that they produce a better product than NIDA.
