Vientiane, LaosForeign tourists are flocking to Laos, but many of them may be there to smoke opium.A top U-N drug official says there are more and more reports of so-called opium tourists. He says they're mostly Westerners in their 20's and 30's.
The U-N official wants the Laotian authorities to crack down on the opium smokers. He says they don't buy all that much of the drug, but they do set a bad example for young people in Laos. The country's tourism authority reports the number of foreign visitors to Laos in was 460-thousand in 1997 -- up from 14-thousand in 1990. Laos is one of the world's largest producers of opium, part of the notorious Golden Triangle.
