California Libertarians are mourning the passing of Peter McWilliams, the No. 1 best selling author of "Ain't Nobody's Business if You Do," "How to Survive the Loss of a Love," and "The Personal Computer Book," who died in his Los Angeles home Wednesday at the age of 50. McWilliams was an outspoken advocate of medical marijuana. He was diagnosed with AIDS and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in March, 1996 and used medical marijuana to combat the nausea caused by his medical treatments.
He joined the Libertarian Party in 1998 following a nationally televised speech at the Libertarian National Convention. "Peter McWilliams was a true hero who fought and ultimately gave his life for what he believed in: the right to heal oneself without government interference," declared Libertarian state chair Mark Hinkle. "His loss opens a gaping hole in the fabric of liberty, but his memory will live on not only in the hearts of grateful Libertarians but also in the lives of the countless patients who will take up the crusade for health freedom." McWilliams was arrested in 1998 and charged with conspiracy to sell marijuana plants that he had been growing to supply cooperatives that serve other medical marijuana patients in California. McWilliams was forced to plead guilty after the federal judge presiding over the case refused to allow any mention of Proposition 215, the landmark 1996 California ballot initiative that legalized medical marijuana. At the time of his death, McWilliams was awaiting sentencing on the marijuana charges. His health was failing after Judge George King ordered McWilliams not to use medical marijuana. According to sources, McWilliams was found in his bathroom choked on his vomit. "The War on Drugs has sadly produced another casualty," said Hinkle. "Had Peter been allowed to take medical marijuana, he could have kept his nausea under control and probably prevented his death. Americans should be outraged that the government allowed Peter to die, and Judge King should be held accountable for his decision -- which amounted to a death sentence for Peter. "On behalf of all Libertarians, we send our deepest sympathies to his family and friends. Peter's exceptional commitment to liberty and freedom was rare, and he will be sorely missed." Thankyou Everyone. Thankyou Mr. Peter McWilliams
Hi Dan Hillman, FoM, kaptinemo, howard, freedomfighters and All,FoM, thanks for posting my article about Peter's tragically un-necessary and very untimely and premature death. Kaptinemo, thanks for your specific response to my article that FoM posted. I couldn't get to sleep so I wrote that article. It wasn't until after I had gotten some rest and reread it that I saw where I had made some technical writing errors that I would have preferred not to have made. FoM suggested that I send my message about Peter to Mr. John Stossel; I think that I'll try to do this soon.Folks, thanks so much for your good thoughts, concerns and efforts with regards to these nasty political matters. Mr. Peter McWilliams was a wonderful, special source of enlightenment for our entire World - a Light that was extinguished and wantonly destroyed by his very own government - the people who legally worked for Peter – and, (by their inaction and indifference, etc.), by many of his fellow beings whose lives Peter had worked so diligently and lovingly to improve and to save.Let us now redouble our efforts to try to insure that the special light that Peter brought into this World is never forgotten and continues to always shine brightly. Thank you all.Pat

persecuted souls
absolutely, we will continue to be persecuted. there is no end in sight. in fact, it is just now beginning. this is a "war" after all. and we are the enemy. Who will die next or what really will happen next? they have new tactics every week. "anti-high" vaccines, new stealth equipment for helicopters, "silent search" law, continued and increased television (media) brainwashing, anti-cannabis fusarium virus, mandatory drug testing provisions for things like driver's IDs, new censorship laws concerning the internet, books, magazines, public speaking, etc. your thoughts will be next. it is most important to remember that their very survival depends on cannabis prohibition and they will fight to the death. literally. our lives mean nothing to them. they want us dead or in prison. if you can't see this just look at all the prisons they are building for us. then look at peter and realize it was murder. they deliberately kept him from his medicine.the sheer evil of these monsters is astonishing and we ain't seen nothing yet.

I'm glad somebody else said it first
There it is, in black and white:'. ..our destructive (un)civil war that we call our War on Drugs ...Civil war. For years, we've all been avoiding the obvious. Many of us didn't want to even hear those words, much less think them. We didn't really want to believe that we were actually in the midst of an active governmental pogrom. Despite all the rhetoric ("Drug users should be beheaded!" - Bill Bennett. Marijuana smokers should be taken out and executed!" - Darryl Gates) we really didn't want to believe our government hated us that much.I'm sure the Jews of the late 30's and early 40's felt the same way... right up to the time they were rounded up. And, no, the analogy isn't invalid. We are a minority. We practice beliefs that the dominant political organizations have gone out of their way to demonize. Suggestions have been made - publicly! - to round *us* up and kill us. And in the case of Peter McWilliams, they have ALREADY MADE GOOD ON THEIR THREATS. There is usually a point in a nation's history, where, at a decisive moment, a slide down into the hell of fascism can be averted. If that moment is not seized upon, the powers that be take that failure as acquiesence to their rule, and the long nightmare begins. Very often, those moments are *not* something that the vast majority of people are cognizant of. Sometimes they are overshadowed by seemingly larger, but less important events. Elections, for example. But years later, future historians (who themselves must be survivors of the resulting horrors)look back and say, "There! That's when things went wrong!". And very often, those historians will cluck their tongues in wonderment at how stupid people were to not see it coming. Just as we do about Nazi Germany. We marvel at how for so long the Jews took insult, injury, and finally death, when all along the way, there were plenty of warnings - official warnings - about their fate. Are we going to be that dense, too?The government has declared civil war. On 70 million people. Time to let them know how big a mistake that is. Although I am certainly no Marxian, the final words of Das Kapital could be paraphrased for our modern times as: Cannabis users of the world, unite! We have nothing to lose but our chains!

A Friend's Comments!
Pat is a friend of mine and was the one that posted about Peter's Death on the Political Board of Cannabis.com. I wanted to share his letter here too.The Murder of Peter McWilliamsMr. Peter McWilliams was a very moral, great man of exceptional empathy and compassion for his fellow man. It was no accident that five different times his books of self-help, personal enlightenment and spiritual growth landed on the New York Times' Best Seller List.Mr. McWilliams was specifically targeted by the US government for persecution and prosecution. US government agents forced him out of his house early one morning while he was still in his bedclothes, handcuffed him and ransacked his home. The US government then proceeded to torture him and his Brother and his elderly Mother. The malicious government bureaucrats wouldn't let Peter use his Medical Marijuana that he needed in order to keep his prescription AIDS drugs down. During Mr. McWilliams prolonged torture at the hands of US government officials Peter became very ill and nearly died.Without Peter's Medical Marijuana which the US government wouldn't allow him to have and which he desperately needed to fight his prescription drug-induced nausea, Peter was forced to spend much of every day lying in bed using every ounce of his strength to fight off his intense nausea.Very Sadly, on June the 14th of the year 2000, the World lost one of it's bravest, most compassionate and courageous souls, when Mr. Peter McWilliams finally surcome to one of his endless bouts of intense nausea that our government maliciously forced upon Peter. As surely as if they had pulled the trigger and shot him dead, President William Clinton and all of the members of our US Congress and all of the members of our US Supreme Court who support, abet and continue our "War on Drugs" and our Cannabis Prohibition, are all responsible for Mr. Peter McWilliams' death - a death that may properly be called a murder. Of course, all the other governmental bureacrats who specifically tortured Mr. McWilliams are also responsible for his death. In addition to the death of Peter McWilliams, these same government individuals are also responsible for the deaths of all the many other US citizens who needlessly suffer and die because of our War on Drugs.Included in the gristly toll of US lives that are needlessly snuffed out because of our War on Drugs are the 10,000 US citizens who are murdered each and and every year that our War on Drugs is allowed to continue. It should also be noted that every US citizen who isn't actively trying to STOP all the terrible destruction and human suffering that our War on Drugs causes - and especially those who promote and prolong our destructive (un)civil war that we call our War on Drugs - is partially culpible for Mr. McWilliams' death... and for the deaths of all of our other hundreds of thousands of War on Drugs-caused deaths that we've had over the last few decades or so - and must share some of the responsibility for Mr. McWilliams' death and the deaths of all of these other hundreds of thousands of US citizens who have died needlessly because of our War on Drugs. As one human to another, I ask that you do all that you can do to help STOP! all of the destruction, all of the heartache and all of the murders and other deaths that our War on Drugs causes. Thank you.Pat Whelanhttp://cannabinoid.com/wwwboard/politics/messages/26/26739.shtml

Martyr making: risky state business
Profanity! I'm in shock having just heard the news an hour ago. The world has lost an enlightened thinker and writer. I had the pleasure of corresponding with PM a few times, and read his excellent book "Ain't nobody's business if you do" just recently; a "must-read" for anyone who lives in the puritan-dominated USA. This is a very sad day, indeed. How fitting that PM's legal inquisitor/tormenter was named Judge George King...George King...King George: Medical-marijuana martyr-maker.Let the corporate-mouthpiece media ignore this tradgedy! As the many thousands of PM's compatriots hear the sad news, one by one they will realize that the government will gladly stoop to murder to "send the right message".To those who think that PM's death was a blow to medical cannabis efforts, I have but one quote (with apologies to Winston Churchill):"We shall not flag. We shall not fail. We will fight in California and New York and in Texas. We shall fight with growing numbers all over the country. If arrested we will fight in courts, we will fight in the media. We shall never surrender. Even if a large number of medical cannabis patients are imprisoned and murdered by the state, the remainder will fight on."
