There will be a press conference held in response to the excessive nature of the 312 arrests made at the Millennium Marijuana March event on Saturday, May 6. All arrestees were processed and held well over 24 hours. Many arrests were made with no legal basis. Many people were arrested who were not doing anything illegal.
Some were arrested for just being at the protest, a true violation of the First Amendment and Free Speech rights. People were also illegally searched. People charged with possession of marijuana, who did not have any marijuana on their person, were arrested (they were only in the presence of someone else who allegedly had possession of marijuana). Attending the press conference will be Norman Siegel, Executive Director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, a supporter of the protest, who attended the event on Saturday. He comments, "The policy of arrests ? handcuffing and putting people in the system for over 24 hours ? for allegedly smoking a joint of marijuana is questionable. Arresting people for standing next to someone smoking marijuana has no legal basis. What happened to 312 people on Saturday, May 6 in and around Battery Park was unreasonable and excessive. New Yorkers need to speak up in opposition to this NYPD policy." What: Press conference and response to the 312 arrests made at the Millennium Marijuana March. Press conference will be extent of city actions
Whomever is giving this press conference will mumble some words about "regrettable actions" and that will be it. The cops will get back to deadly entrapment games on the streets of NYC (see: Dorismund) immediately afterwards.Ever wonder why the words "politics" and "police" seem so closely related?
