JACKSON A former Jackson police officer faces federal drug charges that come two years after he was implicated in a conspiracy to deliver cocaine.
Eddie Lee Burnside, 28, was arrested Friday after a joint investigation by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Vicksburg Police Department, authorities said. The four-year veteran was first arrested in September 1997 by the Jackson-Hinds Drug Enforcement Unit on charges of delivering crack cocaine and conspiring to distribute crack cocaine. He was indicted by a federal grand jury Feb. 9 on charges stemming from the 1997 arrest.Al Jernigan, an assistant U.S. attorney, said factors such as negotiations, case load and personnel shortage caused the nearly two-year delay in Burnside's arrest."There's been some pre-indictment negotiation involved in the case that could possibly affect the ultimate disposition of the case," Jernigan said. "We're (also) two assistant U.S. attorneys short of where we were on the criminal side three years ago."Burnside is scheduled to make his first appearance before a federal judge on Tuesday. If convicted, he could be sentenced to 20 years in prison and receive a $1 million fine.Burnside worked for the Jackson Police Department for four years before his dismissal in 1997.
