Bush To Name State Drug Czar!

Governor Jeb Bush is expected to name a drug czar as state, local, and federal leaders gather in Tallahassee today for a one-day drug summit. The increasing number of heroin-related deaths in Orlando is of particular concern for many slated to attend the summit. However, a group that advocates the legalization of marijuana for medicinal purposes has NOT been invited to speak. Instead, the group will hold a lunch-time rally at the state Capitol.
Cocaine Down, But Heroin Up The nation's drug czar says cocaine's influence is on the decline... but notes there are signs heroin's popularity is on the rise. Speaking at the University of Miami yesterday, General Barry McCaffery says South Florida continues to be a major gateway for drug smugglers. Although cocaine production is reportedly down in Peru and Bolivia, it has increased in Colombia. Meanwhile, agents from the Drug Enforcement Agency say they have broken up a major heroin trafficking ring in West Palm Beach. Five men are charged with selling an average 100-thousand-dollars-worth of heroin each month. Drug agents say Colombian heroin is cheap... and about 70-percent pure.
