Every once in a while a film comes along that the United States government doesn't want you to see. Emperor of Hemp, Jeff Meyers' look into the life of Jack Herer and his fight for "truth, justice and a plant," is such a film. Herer has spent the past few decades crusading to re-educate the world about the very beneficial hemp plant, and Meyers has turned his inspiring story into a fascinating one-hour film.
Hemp examines Herer's conservative upbringing, his stint as an MP for the United States Army and finally his tireless quest to reintroduce hemp into society. Based on his background, Herer seems like an unlikely leader for a movement that was started by a bunch of long-haired hippies. Hemp does an amazing job of detailing the importance of hemp in ancient times, along with hemp's future possibilities. It also examines the rise of "reefer madness" fears, leading to the prohibition of hemp. Meyers' film looks at the growing movement to teach the country how this "demon weed" can actually help solve the world's environmental problems. However, some view Herer as too radical for the movement, thanks to his strong belief that somehow hemp will save the world, and his assertion that hemp prohibition was due in part to a conspiracy between many government and business leaders of the '30s. Still, Jack Herer is widely respected as the author of the highly acclaimed The Emperor Wears No Clothes, which many people consider to be the authoritative book on the subject of industrial hemp and its seemingly endless uses. Emperor of Hemp could help change public opinion in favor of hemp. This film, which Politically Incorrect host Bill Maher calls "A triumph for the open-minded," is a brilliant portrait of an amazing man. Hemp Advocates of Texas (HAT) will be screening the video today at 6:30 p.m. in Batts 215.
