A Day in Traffic Court Ends in Marijuana Arrest!

MIDLAND PARK Police arrested a 40-year-old Clifton man who they said brought a bag of marijuana to traffic court.
"I've seen burglars leave their driver's license inside homes they broke into. I've seen hit-and-run drivers drop their license plates at the scene of the accidents they fled," said Police Chief Tom Monarque. "But I've never seen anything like this."Joseph E. Putz of Madeline Avenue had come to Municipal Court on Tuesday to answer summonses for driving with a suspended license and driving without insurance, said Janet Giardino, court administrator.Waiting in a hallway outside the courtroom, Putz reached into his pocket and accidentally pulled out the bag of marijuana, Monarque said.Officer Noah Van Vliet saw the bag fall to the floor and immediately arrested Putz."You shouldn't be bringing drugs to a place where there are a whole lot of policemen," Monarque said. "It's not too bright."I've been here 25 years, and this is the first time I've seen someone drop a bag of grass in court."Putz, who described himself to police as a self-employed engineer, was taken downstairs to police headquarters, where he was processed and then released without bail. He is charged with marijuana possession, a disorderly persons offense.Court officials said Putz's traffic summonses are still outstanding. The summonses were issued Nov. 14, they said, but Putz had avoided court. He was even served with a warrant for failure to appear but posted bail, Giardino said. The judge Tuesday decided to hear both the traffic charges and the marijuana charges on Feb. 23.Several calls to Putz's home went unanswered Wednesday afternoon.
