Pennsylvania Attorney General Mike Fisher today announced that a drug dealer, who pleaded guilty to trafficking large amounts of marijuana in Scranton, Carbondale and throughout Lackawanna County for the past four years has received a four- to ten-year state prison sentence.
Fisher said John Juice, 40, 531 North Irving Ave., Scranton, pleaded guilty and was sentenced yesterday by Lackawanna County Judge Carmen D. Minora. Juice pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to deliver more than 50 pounds of marijuana, two counts of delivery of marijuana and two counts of possession with intent to deliver marijuana. On Sept. 28, 1998, Fisher said, Juice was arrested, along with two other drug dealers, by agents of the Attorney General's Bureau of Narcotics Investigation (BNI).Fisher said the arrest of Juice was a follow-up to the July 1998 arrests of 14 suspected drug dealers in Wayne and Lackawanna counties on cocaine and marijuana trafficking charges.Fisher identified Juice's conspirators as Steven Gray, 29, of Seven Lunny Court, Carbondale, and Daniel Tomczyk, 24, of 104 Wells St., Scranton.Fisher said Gray pleaded guilty to conspiracy to deliver marijuana and delivery of marijuana to a juvenile. On Jan. 8, 1999, Gray received a one- to three-year state prison sentence.Fisher said Tomczyk is charged with three counts of delivery of marijuana and conspiracy to deliver marijuana. He is awaiting trial.Fisher said that between January 1997 and July 1998 Juice was a significant Northeastern Pennsylvania marijuana dealer. He said that during certain periods of the conspiracy, Juice obtained as much as 30 pounds of marijuana per week, which he distributed in the Lackawanna County area.Fisher noted that a pound of marijuana can have a street value from $2,000 to $7,500.In July 1998, Fisher said, his BNI agents executed a search warrant on Juice's Irving Avenue apartment in Scranton and seized approximately eight pounds of marijuana, several guns including an AK-47 and a shotgun, ammunition for the weapons and drug paraphernalia.Fisher said that during 1997 and 1998 Juice supplied marijuana to Gray and Tomczyk. He said the charges allege that Gray and Tomczyk were involved in distributing marijuana in the Carbondale and Scranton areas from 1994 to July 1998. The charges also allege that many of Gray's and Tomczyk's customers were juveniles in the Carbondale area.Fisher said the case was prosecuted by Senior Deputy Attorney General Fran Sempa.
