Three Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. employees were arrested in an undercover drug investigation requested by the Ohio-based company. The workers were arrested on felony charges Monday afternoon at the Topeka plant, which has about 1,900 employees.
A fourth person was arrested later on an outstanding misdemeanor drug warrant, and more arrests are possible, authorities aid. Several undercover sheriff's deputies posed as Goodyear employees during the investigation and bought methamphetamines and marijuana. Shawnee County Sheriff's Capt. Rick Hladky declined to say what amounts of drugs were purchased. Goodyear, based in Akron, Ohio, encouraged the 18-month sheriff's department investigation and invited news coverage of the arrests. Plant officials had heard rumors of drug use at the plant in recent years. "Illegal activities such as the sale, possession and use of controlled substances put everyone in danger and will not be tolerated," said Richard Odell, plant manager. Deputies and drug-detecting dogs searched the plant after the arrests Monday afternoon. Results of the search were not immediately released. Published: December 14, 1999© The Associated Press, 1999
