Medical-Marijuana Vote in Arkansas to Go Ahead

Little Rock -- Arkansas could become the first state in the South to legalize marijuana use for medicinal purposes in November, after the Arkansas Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a ballot measure advanced by activists. The Arkansas Medical Marijuana Act was challenged by state conservative groups that argued the ballot measure's summary was misleading and incomplete, for example, by not specifying which illnesses a person would need to have to legally obtain the drug. The groups asked the court to remove the measure from the ballot.
Arkansas Supreme Court justices rejected the argument, concluding in their opinion that the summary "informs the voters in an intelligible, honest and impartial manner" about what the measure would do. If passed, the measure would enable people in Arkansas who have certain illnesses, such as cancer and glaucoma, to legally acquire marijuana to help ease their symptoms. Eligible people would get a certificate to buy marijuana at dispensaries that would be set up for the first time in the state. California in 1996 became the first state to approve the use of medical marijuana. Since then, 16 other states and the District of Columbia have adopted similar laws. Most of them are in the East Coast or in the West. Arkansans for Compassionate Care, the group behind the Arkansas initiative, said its proposed law includes limits on the number of dispensaries selling the drug, as well as strict controls over who is eligible to use the marijuana. The group gathered 120,000 signatures to put the measure on the ballot, almost double the number that state law requires, members said. It received financial assistance from the Marijuana Policy Project, a Washington, D.C.-based group that advocates the decriminalization of marijuana. "We hope that this will be a model for other states to go with in the future," said Christopher Kell, campaign strategist for the Arkansas group. But members of the Coalition to Preserve Arkansas Values, which filed the court challenge, said the proposed controls aren't enough to keep marijuana out of the hands of those would use it for purposes other than to relieve symptoms of a medical condition. "Medical marijuana is not about providing health care to people," said Larry Page, executive director of Arkansas Faith and Ethics Council, a group that is part of the opposition coalition. "What's driving this is the effort to legalize marijuana for recreational use." Mr. Page said his group will now focus on educating the public about the consequences of passing the initiative, which he said aren't spelled out in the proposal that voters will review at the polling places. Verizon started throttling at 2 GBs which I reached in a few days. It was as slow as dial-up so I had to upgrade to be able to at least move at the 3G speed until we finally get the 4G Network so I will meet my cap faster on 4G. It costs me now $80 a month for 10GB of usage plus tax etc. It almost seems like blackmail since I had been grandfathered in under Alltel but such is the way of capitalism. They never are content with the amount of money they get they always want more more more.

try refreshing the link, and only push the big arrow inside the graphic- if you try the 'play' button (on the bottom) without doing that, it might be waiting for the initial play command in the graphic. Depending on your bandwidth, it should start playing soon, but it might buffer. If you push the arrow again it might confuse the code (maybe? -IDK).There are other songs on that page. I linked to the last one.I tried it as a 'guest' (not logged in) and it works. If anyone else has this problem, please let me know...sorry its so difficult - I have no more room on my site, and it has been working for others.

There's stuff moving all over that page, Museman... but when I hit the arrow...it disappears like something is going to happen... but there is no music and the marker at the bottom doesn't advance. The arrow will turn on and off... but no music.FoM. Dang! They got you with a limit! I'm sorry. I've still got my limitless data thing... until this old card gives out on me. They say it's old. It doesn't seem that old to me... but when it goes my unlimited amount of usage will be over, too. :0(

I figured you had urgent business. Very glad to hear about Linda not having cancer. Yay!I'd like everyone to know that Cole was the one who introduced us so many years ago, and it was our band "New Wine" that you became the drummer for. Incidentally, Chipper -the drummer you replaced- was there. He practically filled in that huge hole on the mountain all by himself. So, brother, let us not be strangers...We are having a memorial on his birthday, the 3rd of Oct. out at Rough and Ready. You know you and Linda are invited. Please call me.

Museman,
This is very distressing news. Cole's passing is a surprise to me and saddens me greatly. These past two weeks have had me on edge. My Dear Wife was in LA getting an update on here hip treatment when her doctor spotted something suspicious on her breast. She was a cancer suspect and they were sure she had a very aggressive type of cancer and needed immediate attention. I Have been vigilant day to day living off of every scrap of news. After Two weeks of testing the doctor said she had a condition that warranted a close exam but her body is cancer free. I jumped for joy!One week ago my first cousin went in for surgery and has not yet recovered. He is very close to me like a brother. I am vigilant in his case also. He is not doing better. So now I am hearing that Cole has passed. Man, these are some sad days. I know you two were close. I am sure you will miss him. I am happy to hear that he had such a nice service. Sending him off with one of his own songs was most appropriate. Now is to carry his memory on to more cheerful days!

I appreciate your acknowledgement. Cole was buried today on his mountain in a pine box his sons made for him. We sent him off with a great big fresh green bud and a few other items.Strange as some might think, he and I wrote a song together yesterday that his friends, and family and I sang for him today before we shoveled in the dirt. It's called "The Faithful Man." -and I promise a recording very soon.Peace

I'm sorry, Museman
I've discovered (at least I think) death is much harder on those we leave behind than it is on us. I'll let you know if that's true in about 100 years when it's time for me to go.The Reverend Bud Green

You're welcome. Now that I am older and almost on Medicare I realize how much of our visits with friends is talking about health. We also talk about who died recently and about the good times and the memories we made. One friend of ours I really miss and probably always will. He died in his sleep.

I am sorry for your loss. He wasn't even 60 years old. We have lost more friends over these last few years and it is never easy.

One of our good friends, fellow musician and follower of Y'shua, husband, father and Faithful Man has left us to carry on the struggle without his beautiful words and music to inspire and move us towards the light.Darwin Cole Brashear, beloved friend and brother, passed away peacefully in his sleep yesterday morning just before dawn. I was blessed, honored, and humbled to be his honor guard to the veil and we finished our walk together after nearly 30 years of brotherhood and friendship. Many may not understand this, but his death was a beautiful event. His courage, Faith, and inherent goodness is an example I think few these days could muster in their final hours, and is an example to us all.He will be missed, and I hope someday to stop the flow of my tears over his loss. I cry for me, and us, for we have lost greatness that few had the privilege to know.I placed a picture of him in his prime on my website, and some links to his and our music. He would like it if you listened..So I tell the world of my love for you, Cole... Goodbye my friend

*sigh*
"Mr. Page said his group will now focus on educating the public about the consequences of passing the initiative, which he said aren't spelled out in the proposal that voters will review at the polling places."And now the real scare mongering, tall tale telling, and outright lies begin. Their theme, slogan, and motto will be something like, "Better dead than to taste the green!" or "I'm ignorant and fearful and you should be, too!"

The great and noble sons of the south.
Here they are, protecting the children. If only they can succeed in keeping cannabis out of their state the children...wait? Them Arkies are already growing like fiends! One of the most prolific growing states in the country! Even the high school kids have become entrepreneurs. There seems to be no real reason to keep a ban on mmj. If it is already the states biggest cash crop, the kids grow their own, oh! I get it! The pill pushers have struck. They have moved in with their big bucks and high political influence. It is like beating a hornets nest everytime legalization raises it's tenacious head. The domino effect is taking place all over America and the world. It is a slow and agonizing death for the WoD. As we become more educated, it becomes more of a credibility issue with the fed. DC is broken and cannot be fixed.
