Missouri -- A tiny Joplin, Mo., suburb has rolled itself a fat one.Cliff Village — population 34 or 55, depending on who does the counting — weighed in on the national debate about medical marijuana by passing its own go-ahead earlier this month. But before you bring your bong to town, consider that Cliff Village has no illusion that it has become a doobie sanctuary.
“This is symbolism, pure and simple,” said Mayor Joe Blundell. “I would like to be the brave one who grows the first plant, but they’ve built a lot of cages for the people who stick their necks out.”Rather, his ordinance was intended to show grassroots support for a measure that has been repeatedly introduced — and consistently doomed — in the Missouri General Assembly.Like that bill, Cliff Village’s ordinance allows someone with a physician’s approval to possess a few ounces of marijuana and grow a few plants.Even as federal agents make arrests and seizures in states where marijuana has been made legal for the sick, the number of states moving toward legalization has only increased. In November, Michigan voters made their state the 13th to allow relatively small amounts of marijuana for personal medical use. The Cliff Village ordinance takes the same approach.“The pattern across the country is for cities to pass these things as a resolution or some toothless statement,” said Allen St. Pierre of the National Organization to Reform Marijuana Laws, or NORML. “This is usually a precursor to the state action.”San Francisco approved medical marijuana and then California. Denver and then Colorado. Missoula and then Montana.“It’s not Kansas City, (but) it still shows that people on the community level usually want this,” St. Pierre said of the Cliff Village ordinance.Columbia passed a similar ordinance in 2004, and not just for show. Dan Viets, a Columbia lawyer and the Missouri coordinator for NORML, said that the ordinance had the practical effect of “lowering the anxiety of patients about possessing marijuana” and that police in the college town have played along with the local law.Cliff Village is no college town. It’s barely a town at all. It has no employees and levies no taxes. It gets about $1,300 a year in distributions of state fuel taxes for road repairs and $120 to $200 more in cable TV franchise fees. The 30-year-old mayor said the law came from his own frustration with pharmaceutical painkillers to deal with the aftermath of a train accident that left him in a wheelchair.“When I got introduced to this flower, it not only alleviated my pain, it got me out gardening,” Blundell said. “I’m not just stoning myself out. It allowed me to function.”Although Blundell said he’s not smoking dope these days — he thinks the ordinance raises his profile too much to risk it — he wanted to make a statement. For his ordinance, Blundell mostly cut and pasted language from a bill now pending in Jefferson City. The Cliff Village ordinance passed Feb. 1 by a 3-2 vote. (The mayor’s father was one of the council members to back him.) Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland, whose deputies patrol Cliff Village, was unimpressed:“My advice would not to be run out and start growing marijuana, or you’ll be a guest of mine. As long as the law of the state says it’s illegal to possess or grow or distribute marijuana, that’s the law I’m going to enforce.”Complete Title: Southwest Missouri Hamlet Lights a Fire for Legalizing Medical MarijuanaSource: Kansas City Star (MO)Author: Scott Canon, The Kansas City StarPublished: February 9, 2009Copyright: 2009 The Kansas City StarContact: letters kcstar.comWebsite: http://www.kcstar.com/URL: http://drugsense.org/url/KmqBFzDSCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

I hope you get an even better apartment then you wanted. As far as the family it wasn't the rent they couldn't afford but the utilities. We had bitter weather and that is what they couldn't handle.

My patience is running out FoM lol
But I have a feeling I'll like this next one that she's about to show me. I will feel so much happier once I'm out of here FoM. I'll miss my mom, but her man just moved in here, and now it's kind of...weird.I would probably do the same thing if I was in your shoes. Why change something that works. Keep your property peaceful, prosperous, and plentiful ;)I feel really bad for the kids. I'm sure they loved being out on the farm.

I'm sorry you didn't get the apartment you wanted but be patient you'll find the one you will like. We have someone who wants to rent the house from out of the area but they want it to hunt on. I will pass on that one because we've never allowed hunting and animals hang around here and aren't afraid. I hope he gets a job too. The kids loved sledding this winter. Times are tough everywhere.

Well I didn't get the one I wanted
She gave it to her niece instead. Family comes first. She seems like a really nice lady. I already know that she is ok with cannabis consumption, as she came over to my friends apt. one day right after they smoked. They all thought she would freak out but instead she said she loved the smell, and told them she'd rather have some peaceful smokers living there than some crazy, obnoxious drunks. So I really hope she ends up being my landlord :)But tomorrow she will be showing me another 1 bedroom for the same price that she claims is bigger and better. So I'm hoping I like it. I'm ready for a CHANGE. lolThat is a sad situation you described with the family that had to move out. And I remember you telling me about the family moving in before, so I know it wasn't that long ago that they moved in. And it was a good deal as well. Times are tough right now.I hope he ends up finding a job soon.

Something Else
The people who rented our big house had to move. He lost his job so with 4 kids they had to move back into her parents basement. They were broken hearted but this economy will cause job loss unfortunately. The negative ripple effect will go far and wide. I don't like renting because it is hard to find a good tenant that will be able to pay even a modest rent anymore.

I get excited every time I hear the phone ring. lolI just want to get it finalized so I don't have to wait, worry, and wonder anymore. And I really can't stand the whole process. Looking at places, calling landlords, scheduling appointments, hoping and waiting. I'm ready for it to end ;)

I am anxiously awaiting a phone call
from a landlord to find out if I got the apartment I want. My Mom recently got back together with her first husband, so now she doesn't really need my daily help anymore. It's going to feel so good to be on my own. I would already be on my own if it wasn't for her health getting worse. But taking care of my family comes before everything in my mind.

You make very good points. And being that he is from Seattle, a very progressive city, I think he will have a better idea of what will work and what won't.I just don't think they should appoint one person from one field of expertise, but maybe also some health experts on board to help make decisions.Because for instance, simply throwing a heroin addict in jail is not going to help that person. They need medical treatment to help them get off the stuff. Also though, I think since he was chief of a city where hard drug usage is everywhere, he should already know that addicts need treatment over jail. Regardless, this was an excellent choice by Obama!!!

Thank you. I sent him and e-mail too. I think having a cop as drug czar that has seen the end result of drug abuse in his city as a good thing. Seattle has a teen heroin problem. Young people with drug and personal problems go to Seattle often because it is a helpful city to them. It has a mild climate if a person needs to live on the streets. The drug czar can't be for legalization of any drugs but he can use his wisdom to guide policy in a better directions I think.

I've been knowing.
It's ok. I so understand. I thought you knew I'd been knowing... and thinking about you.And I'm thinking you've been doing well at what you wanted to do. To help heal your family.Rifts with anyone are bad, but in a family, they're like gaping wounds. So knowing what you wanted, I expect some of those wounds have healed somewhat, especially if your dear niece is at peace.Death, injury, and sickness are some of the hardest things about life. Peace and Love so matter most when it comes down to the end of it all and realization sets in, if it does. Our God is the God of Peace and Love. 1. Romans 15:33
The God of peace be with you all. Amen.

  2. Romans 16:20
The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

  3. Philippians 4:9
Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you.

  4. 1 Thessalonians 5:23
May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  5. Hebrews 13:20
May the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,

  1. Romans 1:7
To all in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace and peace to you from God our Father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

  2. 2 Corinthians 13:11
[ Final Greetings ] Finally, brothers, good-by. Aim for perfection, listen to my appeal, be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you.

  3. Ephesians 6:23
Peace to the brothers, and love with faith from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

  4. 2 John 1:3
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and from Jesus Christ, the Father's Son, will be with us in truth and love.

I'm always with you, FoM
I'm 46-years-old and I live with the knowledge that my biological father was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer at age 48 and died one-and-a-half years later (an entire year longer than the six months they originally said he had left.) He turned 50 in March and passed away in July of 1978.I miss him so much and I can't help but feel that he was robbed of so much of his life. The same has to be said of your niece, FoM. There is nothing fair or just about young people getting sick. There was nothing fair or just about Tim getting sick and the same thing now applies to your niece. It hasn't been fair to them or you or anyone else in your family.I'll be here for you, FoM. I hang around reading posts even though I may not feel like posting. Just call my name and I'll be there for you.The Reverend Bud Green

Personally, I always hated bongs.
I always thought they were stupid and so college boy. Sorry. I thought they made people look at you unnecessarily. I felt kind of uncomfortable about them. It was kind of like trying to play a large wind instrument of some sort... and everyone looking at you. But that's what I usually thought of them. But they've pretty much been a part of, to one degree or another, the college and university town scene for a freaking forty years! Why are people so freaked out?I understand his embarrassment though. I find it rather confusing and unclear what exactly she's trying to do, but you're right.I had started to say something to the effect that she was just saying two celebrities got in trouble with their sponsors this week or something like that, but I'm not sure what she was doing... but if she was doing that... she's not very smart about what is really bad, law or not, and what is really not, law or not. She didn't exactly draw any conclusions or comparisons... but maybe she's trying to lead others to. Or not. Like I said. I don't know. I'm not sure I know what I think I know! But I know there is a good chance that you might know and make it clear to me if I can't even figure out what I think I might or might not know.:0)What do you think?

Lawmakers Considering Decreasing Penalty for Pot
By Brian Slodysko, Associated Press WriterFebruary 10, 2009Olympia, Wash. -- Some lawmakers want to lessen the penalty for having small amounts of marijuana. The Legislature is considering a measure that would effectively decriminalize possession of small amounts of the drug and prevent officers from making an arrest in those instances. Instead, a $100 ticket would be issued for 1.4 ounces or less. The bill had a hearing today in the Senate's Judiciary Committee. It is sponsored by Sen. Jeanne Kohl-Welles, D-Seattle.Civil liberties groups say they support the measure. They say law enforcement officers should focus on serious crimes like burglary instead of punishing marijuana smokers.Anti-drug advocates say marijuana is a gateway drug that can lead users to more serious drug abuse in the future.Source: Associated Press (Wire)Author: Brian Slodysko, Associated Press WriterPublished: February 10, 2009 Copyright: 2009 The Associated PressCannabisNews -- Cannabis Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/canabis.shtml

If they say "Jump", you damned well better jump, or at least ask, "How high?"Pilfering through people's homes and belongings is heinous cruelty. That's what they do with search warrants.Binding people's hands behind their back and taking their freedom to walk away from them is heinous cruelty. Locking people in cages is heinous cruelty. That's what an arrest is.There might, obviously, be a time and place for such things... but this is not one of them. Obviously. It's taking place, anyway. Is this really necessary? I really don't think it is.

It's rainy and dark and cold

before they started killing them.I don't know why. It just does.

Stomach knotted now...
Got to walk away from this for a minute.Just one thing. How pathetic and cruel and stupid a society does something like this to people over something like this? But... "It's the law". They've spied on, killed, caged, robbed, and destroyed people... many people... for the sake of this misbegotten law. It's what we've been raising as much fuss as we can about. It still makes me sad.
