Michigan -- The move to legalize medical marijuana is advancing in the Midwest, with Michigan poised to be the first state between the Rockies and New England to sanction the use of the illegal drug by terminally or seriously ill people.Michigan voters will decide in November whether to authorize marijuana use, if a doctor determines suffering from such diseases as cancer, Crohn's disease, HIV/AIDS, Alzheimer's or hepatitis C could be eased by the drug.
While years of public opinion polling show opposition to legalizing marijuana, polls and the overwhelming majority of state referendum votes show strong support for medical use of marijuana. At the same time, some physician groups have dropped their resistance to medical marijuana. The combined effect of public opinion, medical research showing benefits of marijuana in the treatment of some diseases and shifts in attitudes in the medical community has fueled the movement that has seen 12 states adopt medical marijuana laws in the past dozen years."We need to get beyond the political debate and into medical terms. That's where the public is," said Dianne Byrum, a former state legislator in Michigan and spokeswoman for the Michigan Coalition for Compassionate Care, the Detroit-area group that turned in 475,000 signatures to earn a spot on the fall ballot."This is really about patients and their suffering. ... For them, medical use of marijuana should give them comfort and not the threat of arrest or jail," Byrum said. Doctors Drop Opposition There is evidence in the Midwest suggesting political interest. Five Michigan cities already have medical marijuana ordinances. The Minnesota state Senate recently approved a medical marijuana measure, though it died on the House floor. A similar measure died in the Illinois state Senate in the past session. Other measures were debated in Ohio, Wisconsin and Missouri.Less than four months before the November election, there is no organized opposition to Michigan's binding referendum. The Michigan State Medical Society, the state's arm of the American Medical Association, recently dropped its opposition to medical marijuana and said it will be neutral in the fall campaign."We're keeping an open mind that marijuana in limited amounts can help some," said Dr. Michael Sandler, a diagnostic radiologist and president of the Michigan State Medical Society. But resistance is expected to develop, given the political volatility of the marijuana issue and the experience California has had since voters there endorsed use of medical marijuana in 1996.The California law says that patients need a prescription to acquire the drug but it is otherwise vague. That legal opening led to the creation of so-called marijuana clubs and the large-scale growing of the drug in fields and homes. Hundreds of marijuana dispensaries are scattered around the state, and dozens of cities have cracked down on cultivation.California endorsed "political chaos," said Allen St. Pierre, executive director of NORML, which advocates "the repeal of marijuana prohibition.""No other state has and no other state will replicate what California did," St. Pierre said. "Every ensuing state [has approved laws] that narrowly define the types of diseases, require the amount of cannabis they can possess is relatively small and the number of plants they can possess is relatively small. And there will be absolutely no retail dispensary-like model that has emerged in California." What Michigan Proposes With that in mind, the Michigan proposal would allow a patient to legally possess 2.5 ounces of marijuana or grow up to 12 plants in enclosed and locked facilities.Although other states have followed similar guidelines regarding quantities of pot and eligible medical conditions, efforts are under way in some states to change existing laws. A proposal in Oregon, which approved its law in 1998, would allow the drug to be sold in liquor stores. In neighboring Washington, state health officials have proposed limiting patients to 1 1/2 pounds of pot, an amount that has been criticized by some patient advocates as too little and by law-enforcement groups as too much. The political sensitivity of marijuana was evident two years ago when voters in South Dakota narrowly rejected a medical marijuana plan 52 percent to 48 percent.Sen. Barack Obama, the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, has endorsed medical marijuana, but only if science and the medical community concur and if it was carefully controlled. Sen. John McCain, the presumptive Republican nominee, is opposed to medical marijuana. 'Just Another Step' There is an awkward relationship between states and the federal government on the issue. States that have embraced medical marijuana are technically in violation of federal law after the Supreme Court's 2005 ruling that said such laws do not provide immunity from federal prosecution. Some marijuana clinics in California have been raided by federal drug agents. The Michigan vote will be watched as a potential barometer for a region that has yet to embrace medical marijuana."This is just another step in a fairly steady progression that the law is starting to catch up with public opinion," said Bruce Mirken, spokesman for the Marijuana Policy Project, a group that advocates decriminalizing marijuana."The dirty little secret to this is that a lot of folks in professional politics think this is a lot more controversial than it really is," Mirken added.Note: Michigan vote seen as test for region on issue.Source: Chicago Tribune (IL)Author: Tim Jones, Chicago Tribune Correspondent Published: July 13, 2008Copyright: 2008 Chicago Tribune CompanyContact: ctc-TribLetter Tribune.comWebsite: http://www.chicagotribune.com/Related Articles & Web Sites:NORMLhttp://www.norml.org/Stop Arresting Patientshttp://www.stoparrestingpatients.org/Michigan To Vote on Legalizing MMJ for Usehttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread23881.shtmlDoctors Demolish Myths on Medical Marijuanahttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread23710.shtml

Love Peppermint Soap in the summer...
Dr. Bronner's liquid, of course. A few drops on a towel that has just had hot water wrung out of it and applied to the face... over the nose and eyes and all and just breathe it in. It's so wonderful. It's refreshing to the sinuses summer or winter.I like Almond in the winter. Peppermint soap showers and baths seem too cooling for most winter days.Bottles of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Soap make great gifts, I think. And what a label for label readers!

I have been using over the counter drugs to help my stomach and I am beginning to believe that they are contributing to my problem. I am not using them much anymore so maybe it will get better. One thing I know is when people post stressful things my whole disposition changes and my blood pressure goes up. If people stop posting things that can set people off that would help me.

We've used Dr. Bonner's hemp soap for years
We stopped using anti-bacterial soap after hearing it can kill our good bacteria, and we chose Dr. Bonner's liquid lavender hemp soap to refill our soap dispensers in our kitchen and bathroom.I mix equal parts soap and water in the dispenser, and it works great and lasts a long time. The Reverend Bud Green

endocannabinoids produced by our skin
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/25641237/
{
Body's own cannabinoids help keep skin clear and healthy....The skin has joined the growing club of organs that is known to produce "endocannabinoids" — the body's own reefer. The biggest producer of endogenous pot is the brain. ...Therefore, the skin may respond to emotional distress as if the body is under physical attack. Protective lubricants are increased (resulting in oily skin) and less critical functions (like growing hair) may be halted. Even though the skin is the simpler organ, as primates evolved our skin likely learned to deal with stress before the brain did, said Slominski. The skin, the body's largest organ, is continuously exposed to a stressful environment, he pointed out. Of all organs, it had the most pressing evolutionary need to develop protective responses. ...these discoveries may lead to breakthrough topical treatments, such as the use of endocannabinoids to treat chronically dry and itchy skin...
}FoM, maybe you need some hemp oil lotion to balance your skin's environment, and maybe increasing your intake of B vitamins would help reduce your stress level. The brain and the skin are made of similar components with similar functions at the cellular level. Both can be produced from the same stem cells, specializing in different support routines. Imagine, wonderful!

MikeC - Thanks
A recent poll conducted here in Michigan found that 67% of MI voters support removing penalties for the medical use of Our herb. I have never been one to believe polls but I do believe that's about where we'll finish come November. And I'm sure it won't be long till you guys follow. Good luck to you as well.dankhank- Thank you! It took a lot of effort from everybody involved. Thankfully our state is full of dedicated activists who gave it their all. This wouldn't have been possible if it wasn't for us all coming together to take action as one. I hope we make you all proud in November!Gloovins- You are correct. The opposition will be coming through the woodwork this Fall. I do feel though that we have enough determined warriors to defend and counter their vicious attacks. And here's my updated prediction with a little spread :)
67%-71% in favorBut honestly, a win is all that matters. FoM- I hope you feel better soon! And thank you as always.

Gary and MikeC
I hope a good finish for us in November starts the domino effect here in the Midwest. And hopefully the dominoes start to fall your way. I think many of the Midwest states truly are waiting to see what happens here in Michigan before they proceed with enacting similar laws there. And my prediction is that we are not only going to win, but we'll win by a landslide. Like I said in a previous post, I believe over 70% of those voting this year will vote in favor of the law. Here is a list of the statewide medical marijuana initiatives voted on by the people. And 3 out of the last four that passed won by a percentage of 62% or higher. Being that it has been 4 years since the last initiative, I feel that people have become more accepting of the concept of medical marijuana in that time. Also, we have already passed mmj laws in Detroit, Traverse City, Ferndale, Ann Arbor, and Flint. Which I believe will help out tremendously.1996 - California - 56% in favor1998 - Alaska - 58% in favor1998 - Oregon - 54% in favor1998 - Washington - 59% in favor1999 - Maine - 62% in favor2000 - Colorado - 54% in favor2000 - Nevada - 65% in favor2004 - Montana - 62% in favor 2008*- Michigan - 70% in favor

more free plans
We already have the technology to run cars on water and sophisticated batteries. It's just that every time someone in the past had try to market their cars, the big oil companys and auto manufactures would buy them out, or worse.I wish more of these inventors would bite the bullet and not try to patent energy devices, but instead put the plans in the public domain, like GNU etc. Just get it out there. That's where the net would let them have a big impact to help people. We need more free plans in general. Free house plans, boat plans, furniture plans, car plans, robot plans, etc. Like free software.

That is a beautiful car. I understand why you are upset about big oil. I knew we were in trouble when Bush became President. Have you been watching Planet Green? I like it. http://planetgreen.discovery.com/When we put on our addition and redid our home we used James Hardie siding which is high up on the list for green products. We heat our home with wood and have never needed to use fuel other then wood. Mother Earth News was our favorite magazine back in the 70s. http://www.jameshardie.com/https://www.motherearthnews.com/We built our house in a strange position to the road so we could put solar panels on the back but we never did because it's too expensive. I think windmills will become cheaper and more reliable in the near future and that would be great to try. Becoming self sufficent as best as we can will help us remain independent from the big companies that rule our country thru lobbying which I really dislike. Lobbying really upsets me in any capacity. If you didn't see this car it was on Jack Herer's web site and here's the link. Before I could afford to get a car like the one you posted or the link I posted I'd get a horse and buggy. I can afford that. I found this recently, FoM,
Thought it might interest you.Attenuation of Experimental Autoimmune Hepatitis by Exogenous and Endogenous Cannabinoids
	http://molpharm.aspetjournals.org/cgi/content/abstract/74/1/20
"Immune-mediated liver diseases including autoimmune and viral hepatitis are a major health problem worldwide. Natural cannabinoids such as {Delta}9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) effectively modulate immune cell function, and they have shown therapeutic potential in treating inflammatory diseases. We investigated the effects of THC in a murine model of concanavalin A (ConA)-induced hepatitis. Intraperitoneal administration of THC after ConA challenge inhibited hepatitis as shown by significant decrease in liver enzymes and reduced liver tissue injury. Furthermore, THC treatment resulted in significant suppression of crucial inflammatory cytokines in ConA-induced hepatitis." (snipped)A translation of the above, for those of you without a biology background- "Hepatitis and liver diseases are a world wide problem. THC regulates the immune system and can help with inflammatory diseases. We gave some poor mice hepatitis. We gave the hep-infected mice a THC shot in their abdomen, it slowed the hep, this was shown by lower liver enzymes and less injury to the liver. It also lowered some body chemicals that cause trouble."This looks like it may be good news for anyone with hep! It is just attenuation (slowing it down) of a certain type of hep in mice, not a cure for people, but it may point the way!

Based on the population which country will get the oil? They have our businesses and lots of money. We were the best country at some point but we are on the way down. Every civilization has a decline and our time is now. I am glad I live in the USA. I have had a good life and have creature comforts. Poverty, disease, lack of clean drinking water and hunger in big countries like China could make things get really bad in our lifetime. I think we need to know that the future will require digging in and biting the bullet. My family has a history of getting shingles and if this doesn't clear up and I must find a doctor and if it isn't shingles I think I will get vaccinated. It cost $200 for the shot but it would be worthwhile for me to get it. I had Hep B and I probably have Hep C too. My husband has had Hep B and C. He hasn't taken any medicine for Hep C and is doing fine. We have a friend who got Hep C and they gave him the drugs and it shut down his Liver and he had to have a Liver Transplant. I wanted to say something about the special on Discovery with Ted Koppel called The People's Republic of Capitalism. As depressing as it is to watch it is worth seeing. When I watched it, it really shows how complex our future will be. The resources that China has won't support their very large population. 25,000 cars a day are being put on China's streets. We are a very small country compared to China. We need a President that will deal with other countries and know how to be diplomatic. It doesn't take much imagination to see that things are only going to get worse but maybe we will be able to slow down the process. That's all I hope for.

Shingles? A version of the herpes virus. Check into a durg marketed in the US for AIDS called epivir. In Canada, they use the same drug for hepatitis only it's called hepivir. There are few to no side effects although everybody's chemistry is different. It's an anti-viral medication which has been shown effective at least short term against variations of the herpes virus (mono, menengitis, hepatitis, shigles, chicken pox, cold sores, etc...) I read about it several years ago so you might want to check current information. I don't think you can get this medication prescribed in the US for anything but AIDS, so you'll have to find a doctor that will let you try it if you chose. Or you can always order it over the internet.I came across this because I had chronic hepatitis b at one point. I took epivir (I got it from the VA) and my viral load was reduced to zero. Subsequent testing by VA showed that my body not only cleared the hepatitis b virus, I was actually manufacturing antibodies against the virus and have become effectively immune. I have to be careful though, I am sure steriods would cause me to serum convert back to chronic hepatitis.Anyway, look into it for shingles if you get the chance.

I have been getting better but now I think I am getting shingles on my forehead. If it isn't shingles I don't know what it is. I have a terrible rash that keeps spreading. My father was a very gentle man. He believed in peace and never liked anger. He had the problems I have now and he died at 69 from a medical mistake. So, We Got Fooled Again
FoM, we are right back to the lessor of two evils. We have to chose between Obama who kissed everybody's ass to get the Democratic Nomination and McCain who is just as evil as Bush. We need an alternative, but the People are collectively idiots and the will vote for the major party nominees. So as this country goes into depression, I want everyone to remember who you voted for, or not. Because you are not only selling out your country, but the future of your children forever. Ron Paul's policies are the only ones that make sense. Eliminate the Federal Reserve and IRS, and go back to the gold standard. I forgot who said it, probably Jefferson, but the banks should never be allowed to issue currency, period. And what do you suppose the US government backed by banker politicians in the 1900's did? Create the federal reserve wherein the bank took control of the currency, and effectively, our lives.

Obama trying to avoid being attacked by the Republicans has to be really difficult. Republicans win by hating. I'm so tired of hate.

I am disappointed too but I'm not angry. McCain is the only other option and he would be way worse.

This Week In Politics
Obama screws up by not fighting the FISA bill. Loses millions of supporters practically overnight. I guess this guy doesn't really believe in standing up for the People. Says he doesn't care if he loses support, and I guess, the Presidency.McCain's staff calls the People a bunch of "Whiners!" They're damn right we are whiners, with a vote that will hopefully rid McCain of his Senate office too.Ron Paul is still developing delegates across the country and may cause an interesting night and the Republican National Convention. There may also be an interesting fight brewing between Obama and Hillary at the Democratic National Convention due to Obama's sudden change in the policies that got him where he is.Stay tuned, it's just getting interesting.Keep toking and voting.

Laval Police Lose
That guy in Laval Canada who shot one police officer and wonded another was found not guilty by a jury. The judge ruled the warrant illegal and the jury never heard about it, but they found him not guilty anyway. Too bad for the stupid cops. I still don't know why the cops can't just pick you up when you're coming out of Walmart or something. The police department should be sued.

Thank you. I don't know how they will play out. If a large number of people come out to vote for Obama I don't think they will cause much turmoil.

A Question
Did the Republicans put anything divisive on the Michigan Ballot? That brings out Conservative Republicans that might not vote this year. They did that in Ohio in 2004.

Help for Wisconsin!
Once the MI voters pass mmj, what would be a felony in WI will be legal if you step across the WI border into the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. A situation like that will not last long. Michigan will help the Midwest big time!

Thank you. I'm glad she is back following your advice. I have heard so much about how bad Vicodin is recently. I had no idea it was so addicting.

My personal family MM story.
It is about my 82 year old mother. Before I was incarcerated I kept my Mom supplied with herbs. It was the only thing she said gave her relief from a quarter sized hole in her hip so she could sleep at night. Now it seems she just aches all over and suffers so she doesn't sleep much at all. She said after I got busted she was afraid to use it even though she lives in Calif. The feds scared her that much. While I was in she got addicted to vicodin and sleep meds. She could not go with out the stuff even though it soon stopped helping her. She went down hill until two a few weeks ago she ended up in the emergency room and was checked in. She was in for a week.Since she got out I convinced her to start using herb again. I tell you she is her old self again. She said she is now sleeping nine ten hours strait through. she feels good all day with energy and in a good mood. My sister said it is like a miracle. Mom quit using the Pharm meds. She thanks me every day and tell me how good she feels.I gave her a recipe: Bake the buds at 300 degrees for fifteen minutes. Grind them into a powder in a coffee grinder. put then into a one 0 sized gel cap. Of course this is all done for her. swallow one at bedtime. That's it. She will live longer now I just know it.

About The Writer
Sometimes life seems strange. When I saw this article I noticed right away that the writer's name is the same as my son's name was. I hope this passes in November. Because of the volume of signatures I have high hopes for it.

McNerney Changes Medical Marijuana Stance
By Josh Richman, Oakland TribuneJuly 12, 2008Rep. Jerry McNerney is now willing to vote for an amendment he'd opposed last year that would bar the federal government from spending money to arrest or prosecute medical-marijuana patients in the states — including California — where medical marijuana is legal."In the past year, the congressman has met several patients with debilitating illnesses that use doctor-prescribed medical marijuana," McNerney spokesman Andy Stone said Friday. "Hearing their stories, he feels that he cannot in good conscience deny doctor-prescribed treatment to a person that experiences excruciating pain on a daily basis."Asked whether this means McNerney, D-Pleasanton, will vote for the Hinchey-Rohrabacher amendment when it's brought forward again in the next few weeks, Stone replied, "That's a fair assumption."Complete Article: http://www.insidebayarea.com/oaklandtribune/ci_9858844
