State Medi-Pot Laws Not Associated With Increased Drug Use, Study SaysAugust 15, 2007 - College Station, TX, USACollege Station, TX: The enactment of state laws legalizing the medical use of cannabis is not associated with an increase in the drug’s recreational use, according to statistical data published in the International Journal of Drug Policy.
Investigators at the Texas A&M Health Science Center, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, analyzed cannabis use trends among two high-risk subgroups (arrestees and emergency room patients) in five cities and five metropolitan areas in states that have enacted medical cannabis laws. In the four states (California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington) analyzed, researchers reported, "The introduction of medical cannabis laws was not associated with an increase in cannabis use."Previous studies performed by the University of Michigan and others have also reported that liberalizing marijuana penalties is not associated with an increase in pot use. Texas A&M investigators speculated that the passage of medical cannabis laws may "de-glamorize" the drug’s use and "thereby [does] little to encourage [its] use among other" non-medical patients.A previous study of state medi-pot policies by the US General Accounting Office (GAO) reported that the laws have not led to widespread abuses among the general public."Fears that allowing the physician-supervised use of medical cannabis will ‘send a mixed message’ to young people or lead to a significant spike in pot’s personal use are unfounded," said NORML Senior Policy Analyst Paul Armentano. "Such concerns, though popular among opponents of cannabis law reform, are based on rhetoric – not fact – and should not guide public policy."For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Senior Policy Analyst, at: paul norml.org Full text of the study, "Do medical cannabis laws encourage cannabis use?" appears in the May issue of the International Journal of Drug Policy. "[Although] WIN 55,212-2 decreased mechanical alloodynia (skin pain) and thermal hyperalgesia in neuropathic animals, … the group receiving pre-emptive WIN 55,212-2 had significantly greater anti-hyperalgesic and anti-allodynic effects compared with the group receiving [it] before the surgery," authors concluded.Previous preclinical trial data of WIN 55, 212-2 indicates that the agonist can significantly reduce brain inflammation and improve memory in an animal model of Alzheimer’s. Administration of the drug has also been associated with the inhibition of prostate cancer cells.Clinical trial data published earlier this year by investigators at San Francisco General Hospital and the University of California's Pain Clinical Research Center reported that inhaling cannabis significantly reduced HIV-associated neuropathy compared to placebo. For more information, please contact Paul Armentano, NORML Senior Policy Analyst, at: paul norml.org Full text of the study, "Preemptive antinociceptive effects of a synthetic cannabinoid in a model of neuropathic pain," appears in the European Journal of Pharmacology.DL: http://norml.org/index.cfm?Group_ID=7336Source: NORML Foundation (DC)Published: August 15, 2007Copyright: 2007 NORML Contact: norml norml.org Website: http://www.norml.org/CannabisNews NORML Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/NORML.shtml

Anything BUT cannabis in one store
I could go up to WalMart and purchase enough prescription pills to kill myself, buy a month's worth of booze to wash them down, buy all of the materials needed to manufacture methamphetamine, buy enough bottles of deadly chemicals to inhale to kill myself many times over, buy enough peanuts to cause the anaphylactic shock death of countless allergic humans, buy firearms and ammunition to do God only knows what AND buy enough cigarettes at the checkout counter to last me for several weeks. All without ever leaving this one box store (that of course "drug tests" their employees.)However, allowing people to grow and partake of a plant that has never caused a single death will give the kids the wrong ideas so these cannabis users must be terrorized and treated worse than murderers.Yeah, it makes total sense, doesn't it?The Reverend Bud Green

Yes Cannabis Shops Indeed
That would make it so much easier for me to obtain my medicine out here on my current trip to Cali. Although it shouldn't be too hard to find some, there's still a lot of hassle you have to go through when you don't know anyone out here. 4 days without so hopefully that little drought ends pretty quick here. But I swear, it just blows my mind to think that we allow liquor stores on every corner in our country, but won't let one single non-toxic joint be sold anywhere. We must change this. And for us to change it I believe we need more big political figures such as Governor Bill Richardson to speak out. Way to go Bill!By the way our petition drive is going well over in michigan. I don't have any actual numbers as far as total signatures we currently have right now, but from what I've been told we are ahead of schedule :)Now as depressing as leaving California is going to be, atleast I have the signature drive to look forward to :)www.stoparrestingpatients.org

Cannabis shops should be like liquor stores, as far as I'm concerned. They should be allowed in any place a liquor store is allowed and under similar regulations as to age and taxation.Medical marijuana should not be taxed I believe, because I do not think that sick people should be made unable to afford their medicine.

Cannabis is good medicine. I know of a recent situation where a lady is dieing and she wanted to have some cannabis. Someone took it to her and she smiled even though she was so weak she couldn't lift her head. That tears me up.

Conversation
Okay, I know there are a lot of lurkers who read C-News and sometimes it's just a very small number of people who comment all the time, and maybe others have something to add here? I'm not claiming to know what's the situation for anyone but myself. How do we take a medical marijuana conversation to the national level? The leading Democratic candidates don't want to bring it up, that's clear. We have a somewhat truce with most of them, but I don't necessarily expect it to hold if a particular candidate is to be trusted or not.I think there isn't a political solution there, in any case, without the social movement to back up the whole thing. We need to be telling people that cannabis is good medicine, and educating doctors and nurses and everyone we can.

It would be nice if cannabis shops were just allowed. How simple that would be but we go back to the same problem of the federal law. That's why I believe that medical marijuana will not advance anymore because they will point to the problem in California with the Feds. They got their scapegoat.

Compromise
I understand that compromises must be made and we will make regulations that must be upheld for commerce in order to preserve and protect the public from adulteration, mishandling and otherwise selling inferior or dangerous products. Those who do business in cannabis and ethically represent themselves to their clients and the public they serve are not a menace to anyone, they are providing as much of a valuable market as those who sell any kind of produce. We might all wish for enough food to eat but that does not mean the farmer must slave for you. Nor should regulations be a threat to the ethical farmer or business person, for they protect the reputation of their professions by weeding out those who might give them a bad name. This is the conversation we need to be having. I want to have the positions of all of us respected, and the outcome beneficial to all who do good.

When we opened our front door this morning we had a critter looking in our eyes. It was a snake wrapped around my porch light. I looked at him and he looked at me and I felt sorry for him and told my husband not to kill him. We got him off the light and put him out in the shrubs away from the house. I never have felt sympathy for a snake until today. LOL!

Not just Fox though
CNN isn't always much better. The news I watch on TV anymore is Keith Olbermann (moderately liberal) on MSNBC and then Jim Lehrer (moderately conservative) on PBS and then Jon Stewart (liberal) and Stephen Colbert (ironic conservative) to get a broad treatment of the issues of the day.Jon and Stephen have been making lots of marijuana references on their programs. They can't come out and say what we do on national television and keep their jobs, but they do seem to think that cannabis is actually fine and enjoyable for people to use.Mostly I read the news (today, oh boy).

The problem with a news organization that gets it wrong intentionally much of the time, is that even when they get it right you don't know if they are telling the truth. The Russians used to say there is no Truth in Pravda. Pravda is the Russian word for "Truth" and it was their main newspaper. Yellow journalism is what Hearst used to demonize cannabis too, if you remember history.

more news out today!
A substance found in the cannabis plant helps the body’s natural protective system clear dry, scaly skin rashes caused by allergic dermatitis, according to researchers from the U.S., Germany, Israel, Italy and Switzerland.Allergic dermatitis commonly causes acne-like rashes on the cheeks, eyelids and neck, as well as on areas of the elbow and the back of knees. Prolonged episodes can lead to facial wrinkles, thickening of the skin and facial pigmentation. The problem begins in youth and can continue through adulthood.Allergic contact dermatitis affects about 5 percent of men and 11 percent of women in industrialized countries, according to an article published in the journal Science.A group of domestic and international researchers have found that two naturally occurring cannabinoid (cannabis-like) components found in the body’s endocannabinoid system – one from the brain, named anandamide and another from the intestines named 2-AG provides protection against dermatitis.

Good luck with your modem test. I just found out this morning that Neil Young is releasing a new CD called Chrome Dreams II. What a nice thing to wake up to and start my day. Maybe Ordinary People will be on this one since 3 songs are old and 7 are new. One song is 18 minutes. YOUNG PLAYS NEW RECORD FOR REPRISENY Times, August 16, 2007Continuing a tradition that goes back to 1969, Neil Young played his latest recording for Reprise yesterday. The recording was played for about 100 people in Burbank. Produced by "The Volume Dealers," NY and Niko Bolas, the recording runs 60+ minutes and includes two giant songs that time in at 18:30 and 13:00, respectively.

Drawing from three songs written previously, and 7 new songs, the latest Neil Young is a very diverse recording. A release date is unknown at this time. The title is Chrome Dreams II. Chrome Dreams is a legendary NY album from 1977 that had originally been scheduled for release but was shelved. The original cover for Chrome Dreams was created by Neil's long-time producer and friend, the late David Briggs. Unfortunately, all original documentation and art for this album was lost in a fire that destroyed Neil's Malibu home in early 1978. http://www.neilyoung.com/news/index.html

Very Sad News
Medical Marijuana Activists Found Guilty On All Charges***Jury Decision Was Unanimous August 16, 2007SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Dr. Molly Fry and her husband, Dale Schafer, were convicted on all charges to sell marijuana Thursday in federal court. The decision was unanimous, and it took the jury less than four hours to convict the couple.According to indictments, Fry and Schafer had been distributing the drug throughout the state. The couple face up to 40 years in prison, and are currently out on $25,000 bail. The two medical marijuana activists were charged with growing and selling in their hometown of Cool, located in El Dorado County.Fry, who was diagnosed with breast cancer, said she used marijuana to treat the side effects that were a result of her chemotherapy sessions.Schafer said his wife was targeted by the federal government after she prescribed marijuana to patients under the Compassionate Use Act of 1996.Copyright 2007 by KCRA.com. http://www.my58.com/news/13911896/detail.html

MSM, Call The Liars Out!
In the four states (California, Colorado, Oregon, and Washington) analyzed, researchers reported, "The introduction of medical cannabis laws was not associated with an increase in cannabis use."Previous studies performed by the University of Michigan and others have also reported that liberalizing marijuana penalties is not associated with an increase in pot use.So, the next time a prohibitionist says that a proposed medical cannabis law will increase useage they immediately need to be called a big,fat liar by the msm! Big news from Kansas!
by Rebecca GannonMedicinal marijuana is legal in 12 states, and now, a former Kansas Attorney General wants to make us the 13th state. If it does in fact become a law, only people with a prescription for pot would be able to possess it legally. For doctors, it isn't a science question; the idea of legalizing pot is a political one.Snipped: http://www.kwch.com/Global/story.asp?S=6939021related site: http://ksccc.org/Home/index.htm
