U.S. House Expected To Vote on Marijuana Amendment

Columbia, MO -- While living in California, David Sapp was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. His doctors prescribed various medicines to help control pain and spasms in his hands and body, but they were either not helpful or their side effects were too severe.“Once, I fell asleep in court,” said Sapp, who practiced law in California for 15 years.
One of his doctors suggested he use marijuana to relieve his symptoms. Because he was in California, there are dispensaries where he could legally obtain marijuana. But that doesn’t protect people from federal prosecution unless the Hinchey Amendment, which the House is voting on today, is passed. The Hinchey Medical Marijuana Amendment would prohibit the federal government from prosecuting people caught with a misdemeanor amount of marijuana with a doctor’s permission if it is legal in their state.Medical marijuana is used to treat symptoms associated with serious illnesses like HIV/AIDS, cancer, multiple sclerosis and cerebral palsy. It is intended to help increase appetite, lessen pain and help people sleep better.“I can talk better, sleep better and it helps with spasm control,” said Kathleen Weinschenk, who has cerebral palsy. “Why is it illegal?”The Hinchey Medical Marijuana Amendment has been offered three times since 2001. Columbia’s congressman, Kenneth Hulshof, has voted against it. In November 2005, more than 60 percent of voters in Columbia voted for Proposition 2, which allowed the medical use of marijuana without fear of city-level arrest.Advocates for the Hinchey Amendment are hoping that if it passes, it will encourage Missouri lawmakers to pass state legislation allowing the medical usage of marijuana.A legal alternative to marijuana is the prescription drug Marinol, which is used to treat nausea and loss of appetite in patients with HIV/AIDS or those who have undergone chemotherapy.Bill Morrissey, a pharmacist at Kilgore’s Medical Pharmacy, said a 10-milligram pill costs $25, a 5milligram pill costs $13 and a 2.5-milligram costs $7. And not all insurance policies cover it.Dan Viets, the general counsel for the Columbia Alliance for Patience and Education, said his wife has cancer, and while she was undergoing chemotherapy she was prescribed Marinol.“It is extremely expensive and not very helpful,” he said.Because alternatives are costly and comparatively less effective, they ask Hulshof to reconsider his past votes in today’s debate.“It’s about providing compassionate medical care for people who are suffering,” Sapp said.Complete Title: U.S. House Expected To Vote on Marijuana Amendment TodaySource: Columbia Missourian (MO)Author: Uthayla AbdullahPublished: July 25, 2007Copyright: 2007 Columbia MissourianContact: editor columbiamissourian.comWebsite: http://www.columbiamissourian.com/Related Article & Web Site:NORMLhttp://www.norml.org/Viets Promotes Federal Action on Medical Pothttp://cannabisnews.com/news/thread23199.shtmlCannabisNews Medical Marijuana Archiveshttp://cannabisnews.com/news/list/medical.shtml

I'm not surprised by the Pennsylvania delegation. The Pennsylvania Democratic party is approximately as conservative as the Pennsylvania Republican party. Only pro-life candidates need apply and "liberal" is a dirty word.

I don't follow how each person voted because it would take a lot of time. I wonder how many were southern democrats that voted against the amendment compared to northern democrats? That might be easier for someone to compare if they want.

But FoM, apparently the newest Dems don't get it.
If the Democrats that replace Republicans vote at a rate of 26 to 6 against us, like these newly elected, supposedly anti-war, but apparently anti-pot Dems did, we can never catch up.What this tells me is that these fresh new Democrats callously used opposition to the war to get elected, and now are callously voting against the people in exchange for big money from big pharmaceutical companies.

I look at numbers and the number show that more Democrats get it then Republicans do. We have many older politicians in power and soon they will be replaced with younger ones. That's my hope. The younger Democrats will help I think.

The difference between the two parties -
Under Republicans Hinchey Rohrabacher lost 163 - 259.Under Democrats Hinchey Rohrabacher lost 165 - 262.A dime is price gouging for that difference.

yeah I really didn't either
I think the final tally was 165-255 or something like that. Pretty much a carbon copy of last year.So much for our new-and-improved Democratic Congress... I knew deep down in my heart that we couldn't count on them.We just have to keep raising awareness and changing people's minds. That's all we can do for now.But I'm not giving up. I'm gonna keep smoking the stuff, and I'll keep telling people that I enjoy it and that it should be legalized. And the government can kiss my ass. Because in the end, I will not let a room full of ignorant old rich white men and a bench full of ignorant old judges determine MY direction in life. They are all heartless and greedy and ill-willed, they don't understand us or care about the plight of the sick, and they can all go straight to hell.

Rep Rohrabacher no mention of ongoing dea raides
Rep Rohrabacher co-sponsor of the Hinchey Amendment was just on and he could have stated that as he is speaking the DEA is running all over his State of CA raiding every cannabis club they can get there hands on. Spending untold millions of tax payer dollars closing clinics that have been voted into law --
and undermining the efforts of the people for the last 11 years since 215 was passed and signed into law.but Rep Rohrabacher is on now fighting his heart out for the two drug officers that shot a guy in the back and never reported it.
Why is it so hard for these guys to make the conection of the prohibition of cannabis and what it is doing to our laws.
It has been reported that at the crossing that the two border guards were at a est 150,000 lbs were intercepted in 500 busts with only one gun having been found--kinda blows a huge whole in the drug czar myth that cannabis dealers are the big T word

According to this
the vote is tomorrow or friday.......menana,menana,menana never comes does it.Hinchey Medical Marijuana Amendment 2007 Dear Ray Green,The latest word is that the Hinchey medical marijuana amendment -- one of the most important votes in drug policy reform this year -- is likely to happen Thursday (tomorrow, 7/26) or Friday. That means there is still a little time for you to help -- and your help is needed! The Hinchey amendment, which will go to the floor of the House of Representatives during debate on the Science-State-Justice-Commerce Appropriations bill, would prevent the US Dept. of Justice (of which the DEA is a part) from targeting medical marijuana in states that have made it legal. Please use our web site to write your US Representative today!Thank you for taking action!Sincerely,David Borden, Executive Director

News Article from Fox 11
DEA Raids Medical Marijuana Facilities Amidst Protest ***

Wednesday, July 25, 2007
Los Angeles -- The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration served search warrants at 10 different locations throughout Los Angeles County in connection with its crackdown on medical marijuana facilities. The DEA's Sarrah Pullen confirmed that one of the dispensaries is in the area of Santa Monica Boulevard and Vine Street in Hollywood, but said she could not immediately reveal the other locations. Since the warrants involve ongoing investigations, "all information is under court seal," Pullen added. Medical marijuana facilities are legal under state law, but not under federal law.
